Super Smash Bros. for Wii U introduces robust character customization options, allowing you to personalize your Mii Fighters and even tweak the special moves of the main roster. This adds a layer of strategic depth and personal expression to your gameplay. To access these options, navigate to 'Games & More' from the main menu, then select 'Custom'.

Mii Fighter Customization
Mii Fighters are highly customizable. You can choose from three fighting styles: Brawler, Swordfighter, and Gunner. For each style, you can:
- Appearance: Select a Mii from your Wii U system, then customize their headgear and outfit. These are purely cosmetic.
- Special Moves: This is where the real customization happens. Each of the four special move slots (Neutral, Side, Up, Down) has three variations to choose from. For example, a Mii Brawler's Neutral Special could be 'Shot Put', 'Exploding Kick', or 'Piston Punch'. Experiment with these to find a combination that suits your playstyle.
- Equipment: Equip up to three pieces of equipment (Head, Arm, Leg) to boost or lower your Mii Fighter's Attack, Defense, and Speed stats. Equipment can be earned through various game modes.
Custom Special Moves for Main Roster
Beyond Mii Fighters, many of the main roster characters also have unlockable custom special moves. These are alternative versions of their standard special attacks, offering different properties or effects. For example, Mario might have a 'Fireball' (standard), 'Fast Fireball', or 'Bouncing Fireball' as his Neutral Special. To equip these:
- Go to 'Custom' -> 'Custom Fighters'.
- Select a character.
- Choose 'Special Moves'.
- Select a special move slot and cycle through the available variations.
Custom special moves are unlocked by playing various game modes, particularly Smash Tour and Classic Mode. Experiment with different custom moves to discover new strategies and surprise your opponents.
