Smash Run
Smash Run is a unique mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U that blends exploration, combat, and stat-building into a fast-paced, five-minute adventure culminating in a final battle. The goal is to collect as many stat boosts as possible from defeated enemies and treasure chests before the timer runs out, preparing your fighter for the ultimate showdown against your rivals.
Understanding Stat Boosts
As you navigate the expansive Smash Run map, you'll encounter various enemies and breakable objects that drop stat boosts. These boosts temporarily enhance your fighter's abilities for the final battle. There are five types of stat boosts:
- Speed: Increases your character's movement speed and air mobility. Essential for quick escapes and closing distances.
- Jump: Enhances your jump height. Useful for reaching higher platforms and recovering from off-stage.
- Attack: Boosts the power of your physical and special attacks. Crucial for K.O.ing opponents in the final battle.
- Defense: Reduces the damage and knockback you take from attacks. Helps you survive longer.
- Magic: Increases the power of your projectile and special attacks that have a magical component. Also affects certain item effects.
Prioritize collecting boosts that complement your chosen character's playstyle. For example, a heavy hitter like Bowser benefits greatly from Attack and Defense, while a nimble character like Fox might prioritize Speed and Jump.
Navigating the Map & Enemy Encounters
The Smash Run map is a sprawling, multi-layered environment filled with familiar enemies from various Nintendo franchises. Each area has its own unique challenges and enemy types.
Enemy Types & Strategies
- Goombas & Koopa Troopas (Mario Series): Basic enemies that drop small amounts of all stat boosts. Easy to defeat with any attack.
- Bokoblins & Moblins (Zelda Series): More resilient enemies that often carry weapons. Focus on dodging their attacks and counter-attacking. They tend to drop Attack and Defense boosts.
- Metroids (Metroid Series): Dangerous enemies that latch onto you, draining your stats. Shake them off quickly by mashing buttons. They drop a good variety of boosts once defeated.
- ReDeads (Zelda Series): Slow-moving but terrifying enemies that can paralyze you with their scream. Approach with caution and hit them from behind or with projectiles. Often drop Defense boosts.
- Polar Bears (Ice Climber Series): Large, powerful enemies that charge. Use their predictable movement to your advantage and hit them with strong attacks. Good source of Attack and Defense.
- Risen (Fire Emblem Series): Agile sword-wielding enemies. Block or parry their attacks for an opening. Tend to drop Speed and Attack boosts.
- Golems (Kid Icarus Series): Stone-like enemies with high defense. Use charged attacks or items to break through their guard. Excellent for Defense boosts.
- Flippers (Balloon Fight Series): Airborne enemies that are tricky to hit. Use aerial attacks or projectiles. Drop Jump and Speed boosts.
Exploration Tips
- Break Everything: Many environmental objects, like crates, barrels, and even some walls, can be destroyed to reveal stat boosts or items.
- Look for Hidden Areas: Keep an eye out for suspicious cracks in walls or seemingly inaccessible platforms. There are often hidden rooms or pathways containing valuable boosts or rare items.
- Use the Map: The bottom screen displays a helpful map of the current area. Use it to plan your route and identify unexplored sections.
- Prioritize Elite Enemies: Larger, more challenging enemies (often glowing or distinct in appearance) drop significantly more and better quality stat boosts. Don't shy away from these encounters if you feel confident.
Item Management & Usage
Throughout Smash Run, you'll find various items that can turn the tide of your exploration or the final battle.
Common Items
- Smash Ball: Grants you a Final Smash for the final battle. Incredibly powerful, so prioritize collecting it if you see one.
- Heart Container: Restores a significant portion of your health. Crucial for surviving tough encounters.
- Food: Restores a small amount of health.
- Maxim Tomato: Restores a moderate amount of health.
- Super Mushroom: Increases your size and attack power temporarily.
- Poison Mushroom: Shrinks you and reduces your attack power temporarily. Avoid at all costs!
- Starman: Grants temporary invincibility. Use it to clear out tough enemy groups or escape dangerous situations.
- Beam Sword: A powerful melee weapon with good reach.
- Ray Gun: A projectile weapon with limited shots.
- Bumper: Knocks back anyone who touches it. Can be used defensively or offensively.
- Motion-Sensor Bomb: Explodes when an enemy comes near. Place strategically.
Strategic Item Usage
- Save Offensive Items: Consider saving powerful offensive items like the Beam Sword or Ray Gun for areas with high concentrations of elite enemies, or for the final battle if you can carry them over.
- Heal Wisely: Don't waste a Heart Container on a small amount of damage. Save it for when your health is critically low.
- Utilize Invincibility: A Starman is perfect for quickly traversing dangerous areas or farming boosts from a large group of enemies without taking damage.
The Final Battle
After five minutes, the exploration phase ends, and all players are transported to a random arena for the final battle. The type of final battle is also randomized, adding an element of surprise.
Types of Final Battles
- Standard Smash: A traditional Free-For-All or Team Smash battle. Your collected stat boosts will be active, giving you a significant advantage if you farmed well.
- Stamina Battle: Players have a set amount of health instead of stocks. K.O.ing opponents reduces their health. High Attack and Defense boosts are key here.
- Coin Battle: The goal is to collect the most coins by K.O.ing opponents. Speed and Attack are beneficial for quickly racking up K.O.s.
- Target Blast!: A mini-game where players launch a bomb at targets to score points. Jump and Speed boosts help with positioning, while Attack boosts enhance the bomb's power.
- Race to the Finish: A platforming race to a goal. Speed and Jump boosts are paramount for victory.
- Climb the Tower: Players must ascend a vertical stage, avoiding hazards and K.O.ing opponents. Jump and Speed are crucial.
Final Battle Strategies
- Adapt to the Battle Type: Quickly assess the final battle's objective and adjust your strategy accordingly.
- Leverage Your Stats: Don't forget the boosts you've accumulated! Play to your strengths. If you have high Attack, be aggressive. If you have high Defense, you can afford to take more risks.
- Use Your Final Smash: If you managed to collect a Smash Ball, unleash your Final Smash at a critical moment to turn the tide.
- Be Aware of Opponents: Keep an eye on your rivals' stat boosts. If someone has significantly higher Attack, try to avoid direct confrontations unless you have a strong counter.
Mastering Smash Run requires a balance of efficient exploration, strategic combat, and smart item usage. With these tips, you'll be well on your way to dominating the competition!
