Controls & Techniques
Mastering the controls in Super Smash Bros. is the first step to dominating the competition. While the game is easy to pick up, a deep understanding of its mechanics and advanced techniques will elevate your gameplay significantly. This section breaks down the core controls and introduces essential techniques for both offense and defense.
Basic Controls: Your Foundation
Before diving into advanced strategies, ensure you're comfortable with the fundamental inputs. These are universal across most characters, though specific moves will vary.
Movement
- Control Stick/D-Pad: Moves your character left or right. A light tilt will walk, while a quick flick will initiate a run.
- Jump (X or Y Button): Press to jump. You have two jumps by default (a ground jump and an aerial jump). Some characters, like Kirby or Jigglypuff, have multiple aerial jumps.
- Short Hop: Lightly tap the Jump button. This performs a lower jump, crucial for executing aerial attacks quickly and staying close to the ground.
- Fast Fall: While in the air, press the Control Stick/D-Pad down after reaching the apex of your jump. This increases your falling speed, allowing for quicker landings and mix-ups.
Attacks
- Standard Attack (A Button): A quick, basic attack. Tilting the Control Stick/D-Pad in a direction while pressing A performs a "tilt attack" (e.g., Up-Tilt, Side-Tilt, Down-Tilt).
- Smash Attack (A Button + Directional Flick): Simultaneously flick the Control Stick/D-Pad and press A. These are powerful, chargeable attacks that launch opponents further, ideal for KOs. Holding A charges the attack.
- Special Attack (B Button): Each character has four unique special moves:
- Neutral Special (B): Press B without a direction.
- Side Special (Side + B): Press B while holding the Control Stick/D-Pad left or right.
- Up Special (Up + B): Press B while holding the Control Stick/D-Pad up. Often used for recovery.
- Down Special (Down + B): Press B while holding the Control Stick/D-Pad down.
- Aerial Attacks (A Button in Air): Press A while airborne. Directional inputs (Up-Air, Forward-Air, Back-Air, Down-Air, Neutral-Air) will change the attack.
Defense & Utility
- Shield (L or R Button): Hold to create a protective barrier. Shields shrink with sustained damage and break if overused, leaving you vulnerable.
- Spot Dodge (Shield + Down): While shielding, press the Control Stick/D-Pad down. Your character briefly becomes invincible, dodging attacks in place.
- Roll (Shield + Left/Right): While shielding, press the Control Stick/D-Pad left or right. Your character rolls a short distance, becoming invincible during the roll. Overuse leads to increased lag.
- Grab (Z Button or Shield + A): Grabs an opponent. Follow up with a throw (Control Stick/D-Pad + A) or pummel (A repeatedly).
- Dash Attack (Run + A): While running, press A for a unique, often fast, attack.
- Edge Grab/Ledge Hang: When knocked off the stage, move towards the edge to automatically grab it.
Advanced Techniques: Elevate Your Game
Once the basics are second nature, these techniques will help you control the flow of battle and outmaneuver opponents.
Movement & Positioning
- Dash Dancing: Rapidly flicking the Control Stick/D-Pad left and right to quickly change direction while running. This creates unpredictable movement and can bait opponents.
- Wavedashing (Advanced): A complex technique involving a short hop immediately followed by an air dodge diagonally into the ground. This creates a sliding motion, offering unique movement options and attack angles. While less prominent in newer titles, understanding its concept is valuable.
- Pivot Grab: Running in one direction, quickly turning around, and immediately grabbing. This extends your grab range in the opposite direction of your run.
- Crouch Canceling: Holding down on the Control Stick/D-Pad while being hit by a weak attack. This reduces knockback, allowing you to retaliate quickly. More effective at lower percentages.
Offensive & Defensive Maneuvers
- Shield Grabbing: Immediately pressing Grab (Z or Shield + A) out of shield. This is a quick defensive option to punish opponents who hit your shield.
- Perfect Shield (Power Shield): Releasing your shield just before an attack connects. This negates all damage and knockback, and can even reflect projectiles. The timing is precise.
- Jab Lock: Hitting a fallen opponent with a weak, non-launching attack (often a rapid jab or specific tilt) to keep them on the ground, allowing for a follow-up smash attack or combo.
- Edgeguarding: Preventing an opponent from recovering to the stage after they've been launched off. This involves using aerials, projectiles, or even going off-stage yourself to intercept their recovery.
- Ledge Trump: Grabbing the ledge when an opponent is already hanging there. This forces them to let go and fall, often leading to a KO if they can't recover quickly.
- Tech (Z or Shield Button upon impact): Pressing the Shield button just as you hit a surface (ground, wall, ceiling) after being launched. This allows you to recover quickly and avoid taking extra damage or being put in a disadvantageous position.
- Ground Tech: Teching on the ground. You can then roll left, right, or stay in place.
- Wall Tech: Teching off a wall.
- Ceiling Tech: Teching off the ceiling.
- DI (Directional Influence): Holding the Control Stick/D-Pad in a specific direction while being hit by a strong attack. This subtly alters your trajectory, allowing you to survive at higher percentages by moving away from the blast zone or to escape combos. Experiment with holding perpendicular to the knockback direction.
Practice these techniques in Training Mode to build muscle memory. Understanding when and how to apply them in real matches is key to becoming a formidable player in Super Smash Bros.
