The Kraken Hatchling — Sword of the Sea Walkthrough

Learn effective strategies to defeat The Kraken Hatchling in Sword of the Sea. Counter tentacle attacks and ink clouds to progress past this Azure Coast boss.

How to Beat The Kraken Hatchling

The Kraken Hatchling is a formidable early-to-mid-game boss that guards a crucial passage or artifact, often found in the deeper parts of the Azure Coast or near the entrance to the Coral Archipelago. This juvenile kraken is a significant step up from regular enemies, utilizing powerful tentacle attacks, ink clouds, and a surprising amount of mobility. Defeating it requires understanding its attack patterns and exploiting its weaknesses.

The Kraken Hatchling is a large, multi-tentacled cephalopod. Its arena is typically a moderately sized underwater chamber or a section of open water with some environmental features like rock formations or shipwrecks that can be used for cover. The boss fight is characterized by its relentless assault and the need for precise dodging and timely attacks.

Kraken Hatchling's Attack Patterns:

  • Tentacle Slams: The Hatchling will slam its tentacles down in specific areas. These are telegraphed by the tentacles rising and then striking. Dodge sideways or backwards to avoid.
  • Tentacle Sweeps: It will sweep its tentacles across the arena. This requires a well-timed dodge or jumping over the sweeping limb.
  • Ink Cloud: The Hatchling will release a cloud of ink, obscuring your vision and potentially dealing minor damage over time if you remain within it. Move out of the cloud as quickly as possible.
  • Bite Attack: A quick, lunging bite with its beak. This is a fast attack that requires a reactive dodge.
  • Ink Spit: It can spit projectiles of ink that track you. These are relatively slow and can be dodged with strafing or a well-timed roll.
  • Charge: The Hatchling may charge forward, attempting to ram you. This is a powerful attack that can be avoided by moving perpendicular to its path.

Weaknesses and Strategies:

  • Tentacle Weak Points: The tentacles themselves are often the most vulnerable parts of the Hatchling. Focus your attacks on them when they are extended. Destroying a tentacle can temporarily stun the boss or limit its attack options.
  • The Beak/Head: Once a tentacle is damaged or destroyed, or after certain attack patterns, the Hatchling may expose its main body or beak. This is your prime opportunity to deal significant damage.
  • Environmental Cover: Use rock formations or shipwrecks to block tentacle slams or sweeps. However, be aware that some of its attacks can destroy cover.
  • Elemental Damage: The Kraken Hatchling is often susceptible to Lightning damage, which can stun it for longer periods, and Ice damage, which can slow its rapid attacks.
  • Companion Support: If you have Lyra the Swift or another companion, direct them to focus on distracting the Hatchling or attacking specific tentacles while you focus on its main body.

Recommended Gear and Items:

  • Upgraded Weapon: Ensure your primary weapon is upgraded to at least Tier II or III.
  • Lightning or Ice Infusion: If possible, use a weapon with a lightning or ice enchantment.
  • Potions: Stock up on Standard Healing Potions and consider bringing a Potion of Swiftness to help with dodging.
  • Armor: Gear that offers decent physical defense is recommended.

Boss Fight Breakdown:

  1. Phase 1: Tentacle Assault: The Hatchling will primarily use its tentacles. Focus on dodging and attacking individual tentacles.
  2. Phase 2: Exposing the Core: After taking enough damage to a tentacle, or after a specific combo, the Hatchling will expose its beak or head. Unleash your strongest attacks here.
  3. Phase 3: Increased Aggression: As its health dwindles, the Hatchling may become more aggressive, using its ink attacks more frequently and combining its tentacle sweeps with charges. Stay mobile and prioritize dodging.

By carefully observing its patterns, exploiting its weaknesses, and utilizing your resources effectively, you will be able to overcome the Kraken Hatchling and progress further into the depths of Sword of the Sea.
