NPCs & Factions
The world of Sword of the Sea is vast and ancient, populated by a handful of resilient communities and enigmatic entities. Understanding their roles, motivations, and the benefits they offer is crucial for any aspiring Waverider. This section details the key Non-Player Characters (NPCs) and Factions you'll encounter, along with strategies for interacting with them.
The Sunken Remnants
The Sunken Remnants are the scattered descendants of the Old World, now living in isolated enclaves across the Great Expanse. They are generally wary but can be persuaded to offer aid and knowledge.
- Location: Primarily found in the Coral Caves and the Floating Isles.
- Key NPCs:
- Elder Lyra: Found in the central hub of the Coral Caves. Lyra is the keeper of ancient lore and can decipher Ancient Runes found on monoliths. Completing her quest, "Echoes of the Deep," which requires you to retrieve the Tidal Amulet from the Abyssal Maw, unlocks access to advanced Waverider techniques.
- Kaelen the Artisan: Located in the Floating Isles, near the Sky-Weaver's Loom. Kaelen specializes in crafting and upgrading your Waverider's Sail Components and Hull Reinforcements. Bring him Sky Silk (harvested from Sky-Jellyfish in high-altitude currents) and Glowing Coral (found in deep-sea trenches) to unlock new crafting recipes.
- Faction Benefits: Access to unique crafting recipes, lore insights, and the ability to unlock advanced Waverider abilities.
- Reputation Strategy: Complete side quests offered by individual Remnants, such as retrieving lost artifacts or clearing areas of Void Corruptions. Each completed quest grants +5 Reputation with the Sunken Remnants. Reaching "Trusted" reputation (50 points) unlocks a permanent discount of 10% at Kaelen's shop.
The Whispering Sands Nomads
A nomadic tribe that traverses the vast desert regions, the Whispering Sands Nomads are master traders and navigators of the shifting dunes. They possess unique knowledge of the desert's hidden pathways and resources.
- Location: Their main encampment, the Shifting Oasis, moves periodically but can often be found near the Dune Sea Spire. Look for their distinctive sand-sail caravans.
- Key NPCs:
- Zahra the Merchant: The primary trader of the Nomads. Zahra sells rare Desert Spices (used in powerful cooking recipes), Sand Shards (a valuable crafting material for heat resistance), and maps revealing hidden desert caches. To gain her trust, you must first complete the quest "Caravan's Lost Cargo," which involves recovering 3 units of Sunstone Ore from the Scorched Canyons.
- Rami the Pathfinder: Rami can guide you through treacherous sandstorms and reveal shortcuts across the desert. He also offers the "Desert's Embrace" quest, requiring you to map 5 new Desert Springs. Completing this quest grants you the Sand Compass, an invaluable tool for navigating sandstorms.
- Faction Benefits: Access to rare trade goods, navigation assistance, and unique desert-specific items.
- Reputation Strategy: Trade frequently with Zahra, complete Rami's mapping quests, and assist Nomad caravans under attack by Sand Wyrms. Each successful trade or defense grants +3 Reputation. Achieving "Ally" status (75 points) allows you to purchase Wind Chimes, which temporarily reveal nearby hidden resources in desert areas.
The Void-Touched Cultists
A dangerous and enigmatic faction, the Void-Touched Cultists worship the encroaching Void and seek to hasten its spread. They are hostile to all other life and should be approached with extreme caution.
- Location: Primarily found in corrupted zones, such as the Shadow Blight Islands and the Void-Scar Chasms. Their main stronghold is the Obelisk of Despair.
- Key NPCs: There are no friendly NPCs within this faction. All encounters are hostile.
- Faction Benefits: None. Interacting with them typically results in combat.
- Strategy: Engage with caution. Void-Touched Cultists often drop Void Essence and Corrupted Relics upon defeat, which can be used to craft powerful, albeit risky, items or purified by Elder Lyra for a small reputation boost with the Sunken Remnants. Their leaders, such as the Void Weaver found at the Obelisk of Despair, drop unique Void-Infused Gear. Be prepared for challenging battles, as they often employ debilitating debuffs.
