Basic Combat Strategies
Welcome, aspiring Sand-Sailor! While the world of Sword of the Sea is vast and beautiful, it also harbors dangers. Mastering basic combat is crucial for survival and progression. This section will equip you with foundational tactics to overcome early challenges and prepare for the more formidable foes ahead.
Understanding Your Sword-Skate
Your Sword-Skate isn't just for traversal; it's your primary weapon and shield in combat. Learning its capabilities is paramount.
- Basic Attack (Square/X Button): A quick, sweeping attack that deals moderate damage. Effective against smaller, unarmored enemies like the Dune Scuttler.
- Charged Attack (Hold Square/X Button): Hold the attack button to unleash a more powerful, wider arc. This is excellent for breaking through enemy defenses or hitting multiple targets. Be mindful of the charge time, as it leaves you vulnerable.
- Dash (Circle/B Button): A quick burst of speed that can be used to dodge incoming attacks or close distances. Mastering the dash is key to avoiding damage, especially against ranged threats like the Sand Spitter.
- Guard (L1/LB Button): Raises your Sword-Skate to block incoming attacks. While it won't negate all damage, it significantly reduces it and can prevent stagger. Perfect for deflecting projectiles or parrying heavy melee swings.
Engaging Common Enemies
You'll encounter various creatures in the early regions. Here's how to handle some of the most frequent threats:
Dune Scuttler
These crab-like creatures are often found in groups around the Whispering Sands. They are aggressive but have low health.
- Approach with Caution: Scuttlers often burrow and ambush. Look for disturbed sand or small mounds.
- Initiate with a Basic Attack: A single swipe is usually enough to dispatch one.
- Group Management: If facing multiple Scuttlers, use a Charged Attack to hit several at once. Alternatively, dash through them to reposition and pick them off individually.
- Loot: They often drop Scuttler Carapace, a common crafting material.
Sand Spitter
These stationary, plant-like enemies are found embedded in the dunes, particularly near the Sunken Oasis. They attack from a distance by spitting corrosive projectiles.
- Prioritize Them: Their ranged attacks can interrupt your flow and chip away at your health. Deal with them first if possible.
- Dash and Close: Use your Dash to quickly close the distance, avoiding their projectiles.
- Guard Against Projectiles: If you can't close the distance quickly, use Guard to block their corrosive spit.
- Melee Engagement: Once in melee range, a few Basic Attacks will destroy them. They are vulnerable up close.
- Loot: Sand Spitters can drop Corrosive Gland, useful for certain upgrades.
Rockback Wanderer
These larger, slower creatures are encased in rocky armor and roam the more desolate parts of the Shifting Plateau. They hit hard but are predictable.
- Observe Attack Patterns: Wanderers have a slow, wind-up melee attack. Watch for their tell.
- Dodge, Don't Block: While you can Guard their attacks, it's often better to Dash around them to get behind their armor.
- Target Weak Points: Their rocky shell is tough, but their underbelly and joints are vulnerable. After they attack, dash behind them and unleash a Charged Attack.
- Repeat: Continue dodging their slow attacks and striking their exposed areas until defeated.
- Loot: They occasionally drop Hardened Rock Shard, a valuable material for weapon enhancements.
General Tips for Survival
- Stay Mobile: Standing still is a death sentence. Always be moving, dashing, and positioning yourself.
- Manage Your Stamina: Dashing and Charged Attacks consume stamina. Keep an eye on your stamina bar (located near your health) to avoid being caught without an escape or attack.
- Heal Strategically: Use your Healing Flask (Up D-Pad) when you have a moment of safety. Don't wait until you're critically low on health, as enemies can often finish you off before you can react. You can refill your flask at any Ancient Wellspring.
- Explore for Upgrades: Finding Ancient Runes scattered across the world can unlock new Sword-Skate abilities or enhance existing ones, making combat significantly easier. Prioritize exploring side paths and hidden areas.
- Learn to Parry: While not covered in basic strategies, advanced You can learn to parry certain enemy attacks with precise Guard timing, opening them up for powerful counter-attacks. Practice this against weaker foes first!
