Understand the gripping story and lore of Tales of Arise, detailing the 300-year conflict between Dahna and Rena and the heroes who challenge the status quo.

Story & Lore

Tales of Arise weaves a compelling narrative centered on the conflict between two worlds: the oppressed planet of Dahna and the technologically advanced, seemingly divine planet of Rena. For 300 years, Rena has exploited Dahna, draining its resources and enslaving its people. The story follows a group of unlikely heroes who rise to challenge this oppressive regime and forge a new future.

The narrative begins with two protagonists: an amnesiac man known only as the 'Nameless Prisoner', who possesses immense physical strength but no memory, and Shionne, a mysterious woman from Rena with thorns growing from her body, who is both feared and reviled by the Dahnans. Their fated encounter sets in motion a chain of events that will shake the foundations of both worlds.

As the story progresses, the party encounters other key characters, each with their own motivations and ties to the conflict:

  • Alphen: The Nameless Prisoner, who eventually takes on the name Alphen, is driven by a desire to free Dahna from Renan oppression, despite his own lack of memory.
  • Shionne: A Renan who harbors a deep resentment towards her own people and seeks to dismantle the system that has caused so much suffering.
  • Law: A young, hot-headed Dahnan who initially believes in the Renan cause but eventually joins the heroes.
  • Rinwell: A Dahnan girl seeking revenge against the Renans for the destruction of her village and the theft of her people's spiritual energy.
  • Kisara: The stoic captain of the Elde Menancia Guard, who fights to protect her people and her homeland.
  • Dohalim: The enigmatic and powerful Lord of Ganath Haros, who initially stands in the party's way but eventually becomes an ally.

The central conflict revolves around the 'Lord of Curses' and the true nature of Rena's rule. The Dahnans have been led to believe that Renans are gods, but the truth is far more sinister, involving the systematic draining of Dahna's life force, known as 'Astral Energy', to sustain Rena. This energy is harvested through the use of 'Renan-controlled' individuals and the suppression of Dahnan culture and technology.

The game's lore is further enriched through Skits, optional conversations between party members that provide deeper insights into their backstories, relationships, and the world's history. Discovering Artifacts also reveals fragments of Dahna's past and the extent of Renan manipulation.

The overarching theme of Tales of Arise is the struggle for freedom, the breaking of chains – both literal and metaphorical – and the creation of a new future built on understanding and unity, rather than oppression and exploitation.
