Systems & Mechanics
Tales of Arise is built upon a foundation of engaging systems and mechanics that work together to create a deep and rewarding RPG experience. From its fluid combat to its intricate character progression and world interaction, understanding these elements is key to fully enjoying the game.
The core of the gameplay loop revolves around action combat. Players control one character directly while the AI handles the rest of the party, with the ability to switch characters on the fly. Combat is fast-paced and requires strategic use of Artes (special abilities), Boost Attacks, and Boost Strikes. Mastering Perfect Evades and Counter Edges is essential for survival and for creating powerful combo opportunities.
Artes are the primary means of dealing damage and inflicting status effects. They consume AG (Artes Gauge), which replenishes over time. You can ass Artes to different buttons for quick access during combat. Combining Ground and Aerial Artes allows for extended combos.
Key game systems include:
- Crafting: Players gather materials from enemies and the environment to forge and upgrade weapons and accessories at Blacksmiths.
- Cooking: At campsites, characters can cook meals using ingredients to provide temporary buffs to the party, such as increased attack or defense.
- Skits: Optional conversations between party members that offer lore, character development, and humorous moments.
- Titles: Earned through various achievements, titles grant passive skills and stat bonuses, contributing to character progression and unlocking achievements.
- Dahnan Owls: Collectible creatures hidden throughout the world that reward players with powerful accessories and passive bonuses.
- Artifacts: Rare items found in the world that provide permanent passive buffs to the entire party.
Boost Attacks are character-specific abilities that offer utility, such as interrupting enemies or breaking their defenses. Boost Strikes are powerful finishing moves that consume a gauge built up during combat, dealing massive damage and often staggering enemies. Each character has a unique Boost Attack and Strike, encouraging strategic party composition.
Character progression is managed through leveling up, which increases base stats, and the Skill Panel. The Skill Panel allows players to spend SP (Skill Points) to unlock new Artes, passive skills, and titles, further customizing their characters' abilities and playstyles.
