How to Beat The Sovereign

Strategy for The Sovereign, the final boss of Tales of Arise. Maximize levels, gear, items, and coordinate Boost/Mystic Artes.

The Sovereign (Final Boss)

The final confrontation against The Sovereign is a true test of everything you've learned in Tales of Arise. This multi-phase boss uses a devastating array of elemental attacks, powerful Mystic Artes, and shifts its combat style significantly throughout the encounter. Success hinges on meticulous preparation, understanding each phase, and executing a well-coordinated party strategy.

Pre-Battle Preparation

Before stepping into the final arena, ensure your party is at peak performance. This isn't a fight where you want to cut corners.

  • Level Up: Aim for at least Level 60-65 for all active party members. Grind in the final dungeons or complete side quests if necessary.
  • Best Gear: Equip your characters with their absolute best weapons, armor, and accessories. Prioritize equipment that boosts elemental resistances (especially Light, Dark, and Non-Elemental), HP, and offensive stats. Crafting the highest-tier weapons and upgrading them fully is highly recommended.
  • Accessories:
    • Resistances: Equip accessories that provide resistance to Light, Dark, and Non-Elemental damage. The Sovereign's attacks cover a broad spectrum.
    • Stat Boosts: Accessories that increase HP, Attack, Elemental Attack, or Agility are always beneficial.
    • CP Recovery: Consider accessories that boost CP recovery for your healers (Shionne, Dohalim) to ensure sustained healing.
  • Consumables: Stock up heavily on healing items and CP-restoring items.
    • Healing: Life Bottles, Pineapple Gels, Peach Gels, Lemon Gels.
    • CP Recovery: Orange Gels, Grape Gels, Miracle Gels.
    • Stat Boosts: Elixirs for emergency stat boosts.
  • Food Buffs: Eat a meal that provides beneficial combat buffs, such as increased Attack, Elemental Attack, or defense. Foods that boost CP recovery or reduce CP consumption are also excellent choices.

Recommended Party Composition & Roles

A balanced party is crucial for this fight. Here's a highly effective setup and character roles:

  • Alphen (Player Controlled): Your primary damage dealer. Focus on exploiting weaknesses, executing Boost Attacks, and unleashing Mystic Artes. His mobility and powerful artes make him ideal for aggressive play.
  • Shionne (Healer/Ranged DPS): Essential for healing. Set her strategy to "Prioritize Healing" and ensure she has access to all her healing artes. Use her Boost Attack to ground flying enemies or interrupt casting.
  • Law (Melee DPS/Breaker): Excellent for breaking enemy guards and dealing high melee damage. His Boost Attack is vital for breaking armored foes, which The Sovereign will occasionally manifest.
  • Dohalim (Support/Healer/Caster): A versatile character. He can provide secondary healing, buff allies, and deal elemental damage. His Boost Attack is fantastic for interrupting enemy artes and healing himself. Set his strategy to "Prioritize Healing" or "Balance Artes/Healing" depending on Shionne's CP.
  • Alternative: Kisara (Tank/Defender): If you find yourself taking too much damage, swap Law or Dohalim for Kisara. Her high defense and ability to draw aggro can significantly reduce incoming damage. Her Boost Attack is excellent for interrupting charging enemies.
  • Alternative: Rinwell (Caster/Interruptor): If you need more elemental damage or reliable spell interruption, Rinwell can replace Law or Dohalim. Her Boost Attack is invaluable for stopping enemy arte casting.

Boss Overview: The Sovereign

The Sovereign is a multi-phase boss with no specific elemental weaknesses, but it does have resistances. Instead of exploiting a single element, focus on raw damage and breaking its guard. It is resistant to all elemental damage types, so prioritize non-elemental physical and arte attacks, or use elemental artes for their utility (e.g., Rinwell's Boost Attack).

The fight is divided into distinct phases, each introducing new attack patterns and challenges. Managing your Boost Attacks and Mystic Artes is key to navigating these transitions.

Phase 1: The Initial Assault

The Sovereign begins with a mix of physical attacks and elemental spells. It's relatively straightforward in this phase, allowing you to establish a rhythm.

  • Key Attacks:
    • Basic Melee Combos: Standard physical swings. Easy to dodge.
    • Elemental Orbs: Fires various elemental projectiles. Dodge these as they are cast.
    • Ground Slam: Jumps and slams the ground, creating a small AoE.
  • Strategy:
    • Aggression: Alphen should be aggressive, chaining artes and building up Boost Attack gauges.
    • Boost Attacks: Use Law's Boost Attack to break its guard when it's vulnerable. Shionne's Boost Attack can also interrupt some of its casting.
    • Healing: Keep an eye on HP. Shionne should be healing proactively.
    • CP Management: Use Orange Gels or Dohalim's healing artes to manage CP for Shionne.
    • Mystic Artes: Save your Mystic Artes for when The Sovereign is downed or in a vulnerable state to maximize damage.

Phase 2: Manifestation of Power

As its HP drops, The Sovereign will begin to manifest more powerful and visually striking attacks, often involving larger AoE effects.

  • Key Attacks:
    • Large AoE Spells: The Sovereign will start casting wider-reaching elemental spells. Watch for ground indicators and dodge out of the affected areas.
    • Summoned Minions (Briefly): Occasionally, it might summon minor enemies. Prioritize taking these out quickly to avoid being overwhelmed. Law's Boost Attack is great for this.
    • Charged Strikes: It will charge up more potent physical attacks. These often have a longer wind-up, giving you time to dodge.
  • Strategy:
    • Dodge Focus: Your primary focus should be on dodging the larger AoE attacks. Positioning is crucial.
    • Boost Attack Management: Continue using Boost Attacks to interrupt casting and break guard. Rinwell's Boost Attack, if she's in your party, becomes very valuable here for stopping powerful spells.
    • Sustained Damage: Maintain consistent damage output. Don't get too defensive.
    • Healing & CP: This phase will likely put more strain on your healers. Be ready to use Grape Gels or Miracle Gels if CP runs low.

Phase 3: The True Sovereign (Mystic Artes Unleashed)

This is the most challenging phase. The Sovereign will unleash its full power, including devastating Mystic Artes. This phase demands precise dodging and efficient use of your own Mystic Artes.

  • Key Attacks & Mystic Artes:
    • Cosmic Ray/Judgment: A powerful light-elemental beam or AoE attack. This often has a wide range and high damage. Dodge laterally or away from the impact zone.
    • Dark Vortex/Abyss Gate: A dark-elemental attack that creates a swirling vortex, pulling in and damaging characters. Sprint away from the center of the vortex.
    • Elemental Barrage: A rapid-fire sequence of various elemental projectiles. Focus on dodging each individual projectile.
    • Ultimate Mystic Arte (Unavoidable): At critical HP, The Sovereign will unleash an ultimate Mystic Arte that cannot be interrupted. This is a cinematic attack that will deal massive damage to your entire party. Ensure everyone is at full HP before this happens, and be ready to use Life Bottles immediately afterward.
  • Strategy:
    • Aggressive Dodging: Your survival depends on mastering the dodge mechanic. Learn the tells for each Mystic Arte and react quickly.
    • Boost Strike Priority: Use Boost Strikes whenever available to interrupt any non-Mystic Arte attacks and create openings for damage. Law's Boost Attack is excellent for breaking its guard.
    • Mystic Arte Counter: When The Sovereign is downed or stunned, unleash your party's Mystic Artes. Alphen's Blazing Sword artes, combined with his Mystic Arte, will be your primary damage source.
    • Healing Overdrive: Shionne and Dohalim will be working overtime. Don't hesitate to use Pineapple Gels or Lemon Gels if HP drops critically. Keep their CP topped up with Grape/Miracle Gels.
    • Final Push: Once its HP is very low, go all out. Use any remaining Boost Attacks and Mystic Artes to finish the fight.

General Tips for Success

  • Master Dodging: The Sovereign's attacks are powerful. Perfect dodging not only avoids damage but also creates openings for counter-attacks.
  • Boost Attack Synergy: Don't just use Boost Attacks randomly. Use Law's for armored foes, Shionne's for flying enemies, Rinwell's for casters, Kisara's for charging enemies, and Dohalim's for self-healing/interrupting.
  • CP Management: This is a long fight. Regularly check your healers' CP and use gels to prevent them from running out. Setting their strategy to "Conserve CP" can help, but you may need to manually override it for critical healing.
  • Focus Fire: While The Sovereign is the main target, if it summons any minor enemies, take them out quickly to reduce incoming damage and distractions.
  • Patience: Don't rush. Learn its attack patterns, react accordingly, and chip away at its health. Over-aggression without understanding its moves will lead to quick defeat.

By following these detailed strategies and preparing thoroughly, you will be well-equipped to overcome The Sovereign and conclude your journey in Tales of Arise!
