Introduction & Game Mechanics
Welcome, aspiring pirate, to the world of Tales of Berseria! This guide will equip you with the essential knowledge to navigate the treacherous seas and overcome the malakhim and daemons that stand in your way. Understanding the core mechanics from the outset will significantly enhance your journey as Velvet Crowe and her motley crew.
The Flow of Battle: Soul Break & Artes
Combat in Tales of Berseria is dynamic and fast-paced, relying on a system of "Souls" and "Artes."
- Souls (SG): These are your primary resource for performing Artes. Each character starts with a certain number of Souls, typically 3. You gain Souls by stunning enemies, defeating them, or successfully guarding against attacks. Conversely, you lose Souls if you are stunned or an enemy guards your attack. Managing your Soul count is crucial for maintaining offensive pressure.
- Artes: These are your character's special attacks and spells. They are categorized into:
- Martial Artes: Physical attacks, often forming the start of a combo.
- Hidden Artes: More powerful physical attacks, often with status effects.
- Malak Artes: Elemental spells, typically used for ranged attacks or area-of-effect damage.
- Break Souls: Unique character abilities that consume one Soul to activate. They offer powerful effects, such as extending combos, granting temporary invincibility, or dealing significant damage. Velvet's Break Soul, "Consume Crow," allows her to enter her Therion form, increasing her attack power and allowing her to ignore enemy defenses, but at the cost of her HP.
- Combo Chains: Artes can be chained together in sequences. Experiment with different combinations to discover powerful synergies and maximize damage output. Pay attention to enemy weaknesses and resistances to optimize your Artes usage.
Equipment & Enhancement
Your gear is just as important as your combat prowess. Understanding how to acquire and improve equipment will give you a significant edge.
- Acquiring Equipment:
- Drops: Enemies frequently drop equipment, especially after boss battles or from stronger foes.
- Chests: Keep an eye out for treasure chests scattered throughout dungeons and the overworld. These often contain valuable gear. For example, in the early game, exploring the Tranquil Woods thoroughly can yield a Leather Vest for Velvet.
- Shops: Towns and cities will have shops where you can purchase new weapons, armor, and accessories. Always check the latest stock when you arrive in a new area. The shop in Aball will be your first opportunity to upgrade.
- Equipment Skills: Each piece of equipment comes with unique skills. These skills can provide stat bonuses, resistances, or even new abilities. When you equip an item, you'll see its associated skill. As you use the equipment in battle, you'll gradually master its skill, making it permanently available to the character, even if the equipment is unequipped. This encourages rotating gear to learn a wide array of skills.
- Enhancement: At shops, you can enhance your equipment using materials found during your travels. Enhancement increases an item's stats and can unlock additional skill slots. Prioritize enhancing your main party's weapons and armor for increased effectiveness in combat. Early on, focus on enhancing Velvet's Twin Blades and her primary armor.
- Dismantling: Unwanted equipment can be dismantled at shops to gain enhancement materials. This is an excellent way to clear out your inventory and gather resources for upgrading your preferred gear.
Exploration & World Interaction
The world of Tales of Berseria is vast and filled with secrets. Don't rush through; take your time to explore.
- Map Navigation: The world map and mini-map are your best friends. They show your current location, objectives, and points of interest. Always check for unexplored paths or hidden areas.
- Gathering Points: Shimmering spots on the ground indicate gathering points where you can collect various materials. These materials are vital for equipment enhancement and cooking.
- Chests & Katz Boxes: Beyond standard chests, look for glowing purple Katz Boxes. These require a certain number of Katz Spirits (found by defeating enemies) to open, but often contain rare and valuable items, including cosmetic attachments.
- Save Points: These glowing circles allow you to save your game and often recover HP/SP. Always save before entering a new, ominous-looking area or before a major boss fight.
- Cooking: At save points or inns, you can cook various dishes using ingredients you've collected. Cooked meals provide temporary stat boosts or beneficial effects for your party, which can be crucial for challenging encounters. Experiment with recipes to find your favorites!
- Expeditions: As you progress, you'll unlock the ability to send out ships on expeditions. These passive activities allow you to gather rare materials and discover new recipes while you continue your main adventure. Check on them regularly from the world map menu.
