New Game+ Features
Congratulations, adventurer! Having conquered Dhaos and restored peace to the world, you've unlocked the coveted New Game+ mode. This isn't just a simple restart; it's an opportunity to experience Tales of Phantasia with new advantages, tackle challenges you might have missed, and perhaps even discover secrets you never knew existed. Prepare for a deeper dive into the lore and mechanics of this timeless RPG!
Accessing New Game+
Upon defeating Dhaos and viewing the final credits, you'll be prompted to save your game. This "Clear Data" save file is your key to New Game+. Load this specific save file from the title screen, and you'll be given the option to begin a New Game+ playthrough. Do NOT overwrite your original save if you wish to return to your completed game!
What Carries Over?
New Game+ in Tales of Phantasia offers a significant head start, allowing you to focus on different aspects of the game. Here's a detailed breakdown of what transfers:
- Character Levels & Stats: All your characters retain their levels, HP, TP, Strength, Defense, Accuracy, and Evade from your previous playthrough. This means Cless, Mint, Chester, Arche, Klarth, and Suzu will be formidable from the very beginning.
- Learned Skills & Spells: Every single technique, spell, and summon learned by your party members will be available. Cless will have his powerful Sword Rain: Alpha and Distortion Blade, Arche her devastating Indignation, and Klarth his potent Gnome and Sylph summons right from the start.
- Equipment: All weapons, armor, and accessories you possessed in your inventory, including those equipped, will carry over. This includes rare finds like the Vorpal Sword, Mieu's Suit, and the Mystic Symbol.
- Items: Consumable items, key items (excluding story-critical ones like the Unicorn Horn or the Time Displacer), and ingredients will transfer. Stock up on Apple Gels, Orange Gels, and Life Bottles before your final boss fight to maximize your starting inventory.
- Gald: Your accumulated Gald will remain intact. This is incredibly useful for purchasing early-game upgrades, expensive spells, or even just stocking up on supplies without worrying about grinding for money.
- Monster Collection: Your Monster List will retain all previously encountered creatures. This is particularly helpful for completionists aiming to fill out every entry.
- Playtime: Your total playtime from the previous save file will continue to accumulate.
What Does NOT Carry Over?
While many things transfer, certain elements reset to ensure a fresh experience and maintain narrative integrity:
- Story Progress: The main storyline, including all plot events and character interactions, will reset. You'll begin anew in the village of Totus.
- Key Story Items: Items crucial for advancing the plot, such as the Pact Ring, the Time Displacer, or the Unicorn Horn, will not carry over. You'll need to re-acquire these as part of the story.
- Map Progression: The world map will be reset, and all areas will need to be re-explored.
- Side Quest Progress: Any incomplete side quests or optional events will reset. This is your chance to tackle them differently or complete ones you missed.
Strategies for Your New Game+ Run
1. Early Game Dominance
With your high-level characters and powerful equipment, the initial hours of New Game+ will be a breeze. Use this to your advantage:
- Speedrun Potential: If you're aiming for a faster completion time, your overpowered party allows you to bypass many early-game grinding sessions and boss fights with ease.
- Item Farming: Use your strength to quickly defeat enemies that drop valuable items or Gald in early areas. For instance, farming the Boars near Totus for their Boar Meat can be done with minimal effort, providing a steady supply of healing items or Gald if sold.
- Explore Thoroughly: Without the pressure of being under-leveled, take your time to explore every nook and cranny of early towns like Euclid and Hamel, ensuring you don't miss any hidden chests or optional dialogue.
2. Tackling Optional Content
New Game+ is the perfect opportunity to delve into the game's more challenging or obscure optional content:
- Glitch Castle: If you struggled with the optional Glitch Castle (accessible later in the game via the Gnome's Cave entrance) in your first playthrough, your enhanced party will make its formidable enemies and puzzles much more manageable. Aim for the valuable items found within, such as the Misty Robe or the Emerald Ring.
- Secret Bosses: Certain versions of Tales of Phantasia include optional superbosses. With your maxed-out characters, you stand a much better chance of defeating them and claiming their unique rewards. Consult specific guides for your version (SNES, PSX, GBA) for details on these encounters.
- Monster Collection Completion: Focus on finding and defeating every monster to complete your Monster List. Pay special attention to rare enemy encounters or those found in obscure locations.
3. Experimenting with Party Setups
Since your characters retain all their skills and spells, New Game+ allows for greater experimentation with party compositions and combat strategies. Try out different combinations of characters, focusing on specific elemental attacks or support roles, without the fear of being underpowered.
4. Unlocking Achievements/Trophies (if applicable)
For players on platforms with achievement or trophy systems, New Game+ can significantly aid in unlocking those tied to specific conditions, such as "defeat X number of enemies" or "collect all Y items."
Enjoy your enhanced journey through the world of Tales of Phantasia! May your second (or third, or fourth!) adventure be even more rewarding.
