Missable Items & Events
Tales of Phantasia is a sprawling adventure, and while many treasures and story beats are integral to progression, a significant number of valuable items, powerful equipment, and even unique character interactions can be permanently missed if you're not careful. This section details these crucial points to ensure you don't overlook anything important on your journey through past, present, and future.
Early Game Missables (Past Arc)
- Warrior's Symbol: This accessory provides a nice boost to physical attack and is easily overlooked.
- Location: After the initial battle with Mars and the subsequent escape from Euclid, you'll find yourself in the town of Euclid. Before leaving for the Forest of Spirit, speak to the old man standing near the entrance to the elder's house. He will give you the Warrior's Symbol.
- Strategy: Make it a habit to speak to every NPC in new towns, especially after major plot points. This particular old man is only available for a short window.
- Apple Gels (x3) & Orange Gels (x2) from Cress's House: While not unique, these early-game healing items are a welcome boost.
- Location: In Cress's house in Totus, before the attack on the village.
- Strategy: Thoroughly search Cress's house before leaving for the hunt with Chester. Check every pot, barrel, and bookshelf. Once the village is destroyed, these items are gone forever.
- Long Sword: A decent early weapon upgrade for Cress.
- Location: In the chest inside Cress's house in Totus, before the village is attacked.
- Strategy: Similar to the gels, ensure you open all chests in Cress's home before the story progresses to the village's destruction.
- Elven Bow: This powerful bow for Chester is easily missed if you rush through the Forest of Spirit.
- Location: Deep within the Forest of Spirit, before you encounter the Unicorn. There's a hidden path leading to a small clearing with a chest.
- Strategy: Explore every nook and cranny of the Forest of Spirit. The path to the Elven Bow is somewhat obscured by trees. If you reach the Unicorn without finding it, you've likely missed your chance as the forest changes after that event.
Mid-Game Missables (Present Arc)
- Magic Lens (x5) from the Euclid Item Shop: These are invaluable for analyzing enemy weaknesses.
- Location: After arriving in the present and reaching Euclid, visit the item shop. Speak to the shopkeeper multiple times. He will eventually offer you a free set of Magic Lenses.
- Strategy: Always exhaust dialogue options with shopkeepers and key NPCs, especially in towns you visit for the first time in a new time period.
- Symphony (Music Disc): One of the many collectible music discs that unlock new tracks in the Sound Test.
- Location: In the town of Venezia, after the events at the Limestone Cave. Enter the house directly north of the dock where you arrive. Speak to the woman inside multiple times until she gives you the disc.
- Strategy: This is a classic "talk to everyone multiple times" scenario. Don't leave Venezia until you've secured this disc.
- Miracle Gels (x3) from the Ninja Village: High-tier healing items that are very useful.
- Location: In the Ninja Village (Ymir Forest), after the battle with the Ninja Master. Search the various houses and hidden areas within the village. One chest contains these gels.
- Strategy: The Ninja Village has many hidden passages and rooms. Take your time to explore every accessible area after the main plot event there.
- Mystic Rune: An accessory that boosts elemental resistance.
- Location: In the Cave of Spirits, after defeating the Gnome. Before leaving the cave, thoroughly search the area where the Gnome was fought. It's in a slightly obscured chest.
- Strategy: Many boss arenas have hidden items that become inaccessible once you leave. Always double-check these areas before moving on.
Late Game Missables (Future Arc & Optional Content)
- Mithril Circlet: A powerful headpiece for spellcasters.
- Location: In the town of Arlee, after the events at the Tower of Flames. Speak to the old woman in the house directly south of the entrance. She will give it to you if you've completed certain side quests (though the specific triggers can be vague).
- Strategy: This item is tied to a hidden "kindness" stat or a series of minor good deeds. The safest bet is to always help NPCs when given the option and speak to everyone in Arlee after major plot points.
- Deris Emblem: An accessory that significantly boosts luck.
- Location: This item is part of a lengthy side quest involving the town of Miguel and the "Lost Boy." You must speak to the boy's mother in Miguel early in the Future Arc, then find the boy in various locations (usually near towns or dungeons) throughout the arc, and finally return him to his mother. The emblem is your reward.
- Strategy: Start this quest as soon as you reach Miguel in the Future Arc. The boy's locations are often time-sensitive and can be missed if you progress too far in the main story. Consult a dedicated side quest guide for his exact whereabouts at each stage.
- Eternal Sword (Replica): While not the true Eternal Sword, this replica is a powerful weapon for Cress and a unique collectible.
- Location: After obtaining the Flamberge and Vorpal Sword, return to the Dwarf Village. Speak to the Dwarf Elder multiple times. He will eventually offer to craft the replica for a hefty sum of Gald.
- Strategy: This is an optional money sink, but the sword is quite strong. Ensure you have both elemental swords before attempting this, and be prepared to spend a significant amount of Gald. This opportunity is available until the very end of the game, but it's best to acquire it when you have the funds.
- Devil's Armory Weapons: These powerful, cursed weapons are part of a challenging optional quest.
- Location: Scattered throughout various late-game dungeons and optional areas. Examples include the Sword of Damocles (found in the Morlia Mineshaft's deepest levels) and the Gungnir (found in the Odin's Tower).
- Strategy: These require significant exploration and often involve solving puzzles or defeating powerful optional bosses. Many are in areas that can be permanently sealed off or become inaccessible after certain story events. Prioritize exploring every optional dungeon thoroughly as soon as it becomes available.
