Magic & Techs
Understanding and mastering Magic and Techs is crucial for success in Tales of Symphonia. This section will guide you through the intricacies of these abilities, from learning new skills to optimizing your party's combat potential.
Learning New Techs
Characters learn new Techs primarily through two methods: gaining levels and through the use of specific items or events. Each character has a unique set of Techs tailored to their combat style.
- Leveling Up: The most common way to acquire new Techs. As your characters gain experience and level up, they will automatically learn new abilities at predetermined levels. Keep an eye on your character's stats screen to see upcoming Techs.
- Tech Glitches (T-Type/S-Type): This is a unique system that influences how certain Techs evolve. When a character uses a Tech frequently, it gains "usage points." Once enough points are accumulated, the Tech can evolve into a T-Type (Technical) or S-Type (Strike) variant. The type of Tech learned is influenced by the EX Skills equipped (more on EX Skills later).
- To influence T-Type or S-Type learning, ensure your character has the appropriate EX Skills equipped. For example, equipping EX Skills that lean towards "Technical" will make it more likely for a Tech to evolve into its T-Type variant.
- Experiment with different EX Skill combinations to unlock all possible Tech evolutions for each character.
- Specific Events/Items: A few Techs are learned through story progression, side quests, or by using rare items.
- For example, Lloyd can learn the powerful Rising Falcon Tech after a certain event in the story involving Dirk. visit Dirk's House in Iselia after the events at the Tower of Mana.
- Some characters, like Raine, will learn new healing and offensive spells as the story progresses and they gain access to more powerful elemental spirits.
Magic Spells (Raine & Genis)
Raine and Genis are your primary magic users. Their spells are divided into elemental categories and serve different purposes in combat.
Raine's Healing & Support Spells
Raine is the party's dedicated healer and support caster. Prioritize keeping her alive and casting her healing spells when needed. Equip her with accessories that boost her TP and casting speed.
- First Aid: Your basic healing spell. Learned early on. Essential for keeping your party healthy.
- Nurse: A more potent healing spell that targets a wider area. Learned around Level 15-20.
- Recover: Cures status ailments. Invaluable against enemies that inflict poison, paralysis, etc. Learned around Level 10.
- Barrier/Force Field: Defensive spells that increase your party's defense. Use these against tough bosses. Barrier is learned around Level 25, Force Field around Level 40.
- Revitalize: Raine's most powerful single-target healing spell. Learned much later in the game, typically Level 50+.
- Resurrection: Revives a fallen ally. Crucial for challenging encounters. Learned around Level 35-40.
Genis's Offensive Spells
Genis is your primary damage dealer through magic. His spells cover various elements, making him versatile against different enemy types.
- Fire Ball: Basic fire spell. Effective against ice-elemental enemies. Learned early.
- Stone Blast: Basic earth spell. Good against flying enemies. Learned early.
- Spark: Basic lightning spell. Useful against water-elemental foes. Learned around Level 10.
- Aqua Laser: Basic water spell. Strong against fire-elemental enemies. Learned around Level 15.
- Absolute: Powerful ice spell. Excellent against fire-elemental enemies. Learned around Level 25-30.
- Explosion: High-damage fire spell. Learned around Level 35-40.
- Indignation: Genis's signature lightning spell, one of the strongest in the game. Learned around Level 50-55.
- Meteor Storm: A devastating non-elemental spell. Learned very late, often Level 60+.
Tech Usage & Strategy
Effective use of Techs is key to dominating battles. Consider the following strategies:
- TP Management: Techs consume TP (Technical Points). Always carry plenty of Apple Gels and Orange Gels. Later in the game, Lemon Gels and Pineapple Gels become essential. You can purchase these from item shops in most towns, such as Triet, Palmacosta, and Izoold.
- Elemental Weaknesses: Exploit enemy elemental weaknesses. Use Genis's elemental spells or Lloyd's elemental-infused Techs (via EX Skills or weapon enchantments) to deal increased damage. Check the enemy's information in the Battle Book (accessed from the main menu) to identify weaknesses.
- Unison Attacks: Coordinate your Techs for powerful Unison Attacks. When the Unison Attack gauge fills, press the 'Z' button (GameCube) or equivalent. Each character can contribute one Tech. Combining certain Techs can lead to powerful Mystic Artes. For example, Lloyd's Tempest and Colette's Pow Hammer can lead to a combined attack.
- Over Limit: When a character enters Over Limit, their Techs cost no TP and they cannot be staggered. This is a prime opportunity to unleash your most powerful Techs or cast high-cost spells repeatedly. The Over Limit gauge fills as you take and deal damage.
- Customizing Tech Shortcuts: In the Tech menu, you can assign Techs to shortcuts (e.g., C-stick directions on GameCube). This allows for quick access to frequently used abilities during combat. Assign healing spells to Raine and powerful offensive spells to Genis for immediate use.
Mystic Artes
Mystic Artes are ultimate Techs that deal massive damage. They are typically unlocked by combining specific Techs during a Unison Attack while a character is in Over Limit, or by equipping certain EX Skills.
- Lloyd's Falcon's Crest: To perform this, Lloyd must be in Over Limit and execute the Rising Falcon Tech.
- Genis's Indignation Judgment: Genis needs to be in Over Limit and cast Indignation during a Unison Attack with Raine casting Ray.
- Colette's Holy Judgment: Colette must be in Over Limit and use Judgment during a Unison Attack with Raine casting Holy Lance.
Experiment with different Tech combinations and Over Limit states to discover all the powerful Mystic Artes available to your party!
