Elemental Properties & Weaknesses
Understanding the elemental properties of both your party members' attacks and the enemies you face is paramount to success in Tales of Symphonia. Exploiting weaknesses can dramatically shorten battles, conserve TP, and make even the toughest foes manageable. Conversely, ignoring resistances can lead to frustratingly long encounters and wasted resources.
The Six Core Elements
The world of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla is governed by six primary elements, each with a direct opposing force:
- Fire: Strong against Ice, weak against Water.
- Ice: Strong against Water, weak against Fire.
- Water: Strong against Fire, weak against Ice.
- Wind: Strong against Earth, weak against Lightning.
- Earth: Strong against Lightning, weak against Wind.
- Lightning: Strong against Wind, weak against Earth.
Additionally, there are two special elements:
- Light: Generally strong against Dark, but some enemies may resist both.
- Dark: Generally strong against Light, but some enemies may resist both.
Identifying Elemental Properties
Knowing an enemy's elemental affinity is your first step. Here's how to gather this crucial information:
- Magic Lens: This is your most reliable tool. Use a Magic Lens on every new enemy you encounter. The battle information screen will display their elemental resistances and weaknesses. You can purchase Magic Lenses from most item shops, such as the one in Triet or Palmacosta, for 100 Gald each. Stock up!
- Elemental Icons: During battle, some enemies will visibly glow with an elemental aura or have elemental effects surrounding them, hinting at their primary element. For example, a fiery enemy likely has Fire properties.
- Spell Effects: Pay attention to how your elemental spells affect enemies. If a Fireball deals significantly less damage than expected, the enemy likely resists Fire or is strong against it. Conversely, a massive damage spike indicates a weakness.
Exploiting Weaknesses: Strategies & Equipment
Once you've identified an enemy's weakness, it's time to unleash elemental fury. Here's how to maximize your damage output:
1. Customize Your Artes
- Assign Elemental Artes: Ensure your spellcasters (Genis, Raine, Colette, Zelos/Kratos) have several elemental spells equipped. For example, if facing an Ice-weak enemy, make sure Genis has Fireball, Eruption, or Explosion assigned to his shortcuts.
- Tech Glitches (Advanced): Some characters, like Lloyd, can gain elemental properties on their physical attacks through specific EX Skills or equipped weapons. For instance, equipping the Flamberge (found in the Temple of Fire) will imbue Lloyd's attacks with Fire.
2. Weapon & Accessory Augmentation
Many weapons and accessories carry inherent elemental properties or provide resistance/weakness manipulation:
- Elemental Weapons: Look for weapons with elemental names (e.g., Aqua Brand for Water, Thunder Sword for Lightning). Equipping these on your physical attackers (Lloyd, Kratos, Zelos, Presea) will add that element to their regular attacks. These are often found in elemental temples or as drops from specific bosses.
- Elemental Rings: Accessories like the Aqua Ring or Flare Ring can grant resistance to specific elements, reducing incoming damage. These are invaluable for boss fights where a particular element is heavily used. You can often find these in dungeons or purchase them from certain merchants later in the game.
- Elemental Charms/Gems: These items, like the Fire Charm or Ice Charm, can be equipped to provide a significant boost in resistance to a specific element. They are often found in treasure chests within dungeons corresponding to their element.
3. EX Skills & Compound EX Skills
Certain EX Skills can augment your characters' elemental capabilities:
- Elemental Guard: Some EX Skills increase resistance to specific elements. Check each character's EX Skill tree for these defensive options.
- Elemental Attack Boosts: Other EX Skills might increase the damage of elemental artes. For example, Genis has several EX Skills that boost his spell damage.
- Compound EX Skills: Experiment with combining EX Gems to unlock powerful Compound EX Skills that can provide broad elemental protection or offensive boosts. For instance, combining certain EX Skills can grant "Element Guard" which reduces damage from all elemental attacks.
4. Overlimit & Unison Attacks
During Overlimit, your characters' spell casting times are reduced, and physical attacks become more potent. This is an excellent opportunity to chain elemental artes and physical attacks with elemental properties. Coordinate a Unison Attack with multiple elemental artes targeting an enemy's weakness for devastating damage.
Common Elemental Weaknesses by Enemy Type
While a Magic Lens is always best, here are some general guidelines for common enemy types:
- Fire-based enemies (e.g., Fire Elements, Efreet): Often weak to Water and Ice.
- Ice-based enemies (e.g., Ice Elements, Celsius): Often weak to Fire.
- Plant/Nature-based enemies (e.g., Mandragora, Treant): Often weak to Fire.
- Flying enemies (e.g., Harpies, Gryphons): Can sometimes be weak to Wind or Lightning.
- Armored/Stone enemies (e.g., Golems, Rock Golems): Often weak to Wind or Lightning, sometimes Earth.
- Undead enemies (e.g., Zombies, Ghosts): Often weak to Light.
- Demons/Dark creatures: Often weak to Light.
Remember, these are generalizations. Always use a Magic Lens for precise information, especially against bosses!
