The Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System (FR-LMBS) is the heart of Tales of the Abyss combat. Unlike previous Tales games, FR-LMBS introduces 'Free Run,' allowing you to move in any direction on the battlefield by holding L1. This is vital for dodging enemy attacks, flanking, and positioning for Area of Effect (AoE) Artes. Combat is real-time; you control one character while the others are managed by AI, which you can customize extensively in the Strategy menu. Normal attacks are performed with the X button, and Artes (special skills) are assigned to the Circle button in combination with a direction (up, down, left, right, or neutral). Fonic Artes are magic spells, while Martial Artes are physical techniques. Field of Fonons (FoF) changes are a key mechanic: certain Artes leave behind elemental fields, and if another Arte of the same element is used within that field, it can transform into a more powerful FoF Change Arte. Mastering FoF changes is crucial for maximizing damage and exploiting enemy weaknesses. The Over Limit gauge fills as you deal and take damage; when full, activating it grants temporary invincibility, increased damage, and allows for powerful Mystic Artes. Experiment with different character strategies and Arte combinations to find what works best for your playstyle.
