Cooking & Recipes

Beyond the thrill of battle and the depths of the storyline, Tales of the Abyss offers a surprisingly robust cooking system that can significantly impact your party's performance. Mastering the culinary arts provides crucial stat boosts, HP/TP recovery, and even status ailment cures, making it an invaluable tool throughout your journey across Auldrant.

The Basics of Cooking

To begin cooking, you'll first need a recipe and the necessary ingredients. Recipes are acquired in various ways:

  • Story Progression: Some recipes are learned automatically as you advance through the main plot.
  • Side Quests: Many NPCs in towns and cities will teach you recipes after completing a small task or simply by talking to them. Always explore thoroughly and speak to everyone!
  • Chests: Keep an eye out for treasure chests in dungeons and on the world map; some contain valuable recipe books.
  • Cooking Contests: Winning these events (more on that below) can unlock advanced recipes.

Ingredients are found almost everywhere. You can:

  • Purchase from Shops: Most towns have general stores or food vendors selling basic ingredients like Lettuce, Eggs, and Milk.
  • Monster Drops: Many enemies drop specific food items, such as Chicken from Cockatrices or Beef from various beast-type foes.
  • Gathering Points: On the world map and within certain dungeons, sparkling points indicate gatherable ingredients like Apples or Carrots.
  • Chests: Like recipes, ingredients can also be found in treasure chests.

Once you have a recipe and ingredients, open your menu, navigate to the "Items" section, and select "Cook." Choose your desired recipe, and if you have the ingredients, you can prepare the dish. Each character has a different proficiency with cooking, affecting the success rate and the quality of the cooked meal. Experiment to find who excels at what!

Cooking Masteries and Skills

Each playable character has a unique cooking skill and proficiency. The more a character cooks a specific dish, the higher their mastery of that recipe becomes. Higher mastery leads to:

  • Increased Success Rate: Less chance of creating a "Failed Dish."
  • Improved Stat Bonuses: Cooked meals will provide better stat boosts or recovery effects.
  • Special Effects: At very high mastery, some dishes might gain additional beneficial effects.

It's advisable to rotate which character cooks, especially for dishes that provide different benefits. For example, Jade might be excellent at preparing dishes that boost Intelligence, while Guy could excel at Strength-boosting meals.

Key Recipes and Where to Find Them

Here are some essential recipes to prioritize early on and throughout your adventure:

  • Sandwich:
    • Effect: Minor HP recovery.
    • Ingredients: Bread, Lettuce, Egg.
    • Location: Often one of the first recipes you'll obtain, usually taught by an NPC in Engeve or Baticul early in the game.
  • Omelet:
    • Effect: Minor TP recovery.
    • Ingredients: Egg, Milk.
    • Location: Similar to Sandwich, an early acquisition, often from an NPC in Engeve.
  • Miso Soup:
    • Effect: HP/TP recovery, often with a minor stat boost.
    • Ingredients: Miso, Tofu, Kelp.
    • Location: Look for this recipe in Kaitzur or Grand Chokmah. An NPC in the Grand Chokmah market district often teaches it.
  • Sushi:
    • Effect: Significant HP recovery, sometimes with a Luck boost.
    • Ingredients: Rice, Tuna, Kelp.
    • Location: Often found in port towns like Port Baticul or Kaitzur. Check the local fishmongers or talk to residents.
  • Beef Stew:
    • Effect: Major HP recovery and a temporary Strength boost.
    • Ingredients: Beef, Potato, Carrot.
    • Location: A mid-game recipe, often acquired in St. Binah or Sheridan. An old woman near the Sheridan port might teach it.

Cooking Contests

Throughout Auldrant, you'll encounter various cooking contests. These are excellent opportunities to:

  • Earn New Recipes: Winning often grants you exclusive, powerful recipes.
  • Obtain Rare Ingredients: Prizes can include hard-to-find cooking components.
  • Increase Character Cooking Skills: Participating and winning boosts your party's overall culinary prowess.

Keep an eye out for NPCs announcing these events in major cities like Baticul, Grand Chokmah, and Sheridan. They usually require you to present a specific dish with a high success rate, so ensure your chosen chef has high mastery for that recipe.

Advanced Tips for Aspiring Chefs

  • Ingredient Hoarding: Always buy or gather ingredients when you have the chance, especially staples like Eggs, Milk, Bread, and various meats/vegetables. You never know when you'll need them for a new recipe or a cooking contest.
  • Failed Dishes: Don't despair if you create a "Failed Dish." While useless for consumption, they still count towards a character's cooking attempts, slowly increasing their mastery for that recipe.
  • Cooking for Bosses: Before challenging a difficult boss, cook meals that provide beneficial stat boosts (e.g., Strength, Defense, Agility) or significant HP/TP recovery. These temporary buffs can turn the tide of battle.
  • Experimentation: While the game provides recipes, sometimes combining ingredients without a recipe can lead to discovering new dishes or even unique "Failed Dishes" with humorous descriptions.

By investing time in the cooking system, you'll find your party much more resilient and powerful, ready to face any challenge the Score has in store!
