Character Customization
While Tales of Vesperia doesn't feature a traditional character creator, it offers a robust system for customizing your party members' combat effectiveness and even their appearance through titles and attachments. Mastering these systems is crucial for tackling the game's tougher challenges and personalizing your adventure.
Skill Customization: The Heart of Combat
The primary method of character customization in Tales of Vesperia revolves around the Skill system. Each piece of equipment (weapons, armor, accessories) comes with a set of embedded skills. By equipping an item, you gain access to its skills. Once a character has accumulated enough experience with a particular skill (indicated by a progress bar filling up), they "learn" it permanently. This allows them to equip the skill without needing the original item, freeing up equipment slots for other benefits.
Learning Skills Effectively:
- Prioritize Learning: Early in the game, focus on learning as many skills as possible. Even seemingly minor skills can combine to create powerful synergies later on.
- Weapon & Armor Skills: Pay close attention to the skills offered by new weapons and armor. Often, a slightly weaker piece of equipment with a desirable skill to learn is more valuable in the long run than a stronger one without.
- Accessory Skills: Accessories are fantastic for targeted skill acquisition. For example, the Minimum Damage skill (often found on items like the Minimum Damage Ring) is invaluable for secret missions, allowing you to deal 1 damage per hit.
- Over Limit Boosts: Skills like OL Boost (often learned from weapons like the Broadsword for Yuri) are essential for increasing your Over Limit gauge faster, leading to more powerful Mystic Artes.
- HP/TP Recovery: Skills such as HP Recover and TP Recover (found on various armor pieces and accessories) can significantly reduce your reliance on healing items and spells.
Strategic Skill Setup:
Once skills are learned, you can freely equip them in your character's skill slots. Each skill consumes a certain amount of "SP" (Skill Points), and each character has a maximum SP capacity. Carefully consider your party's roles and the challenges ahead when allocating skills.
- Yuri: Focus on offensive skills like Attack Plus, Strength, and Combo Plus. Don't forget defensive skills like Guard Plus for boss fights.
- Estelle: Prioritize healing and support skills such as Spirit Healer, Magic Guard, and Resurrection.
- Karol: Emphasize physical attack skills, but also consider skills that boost his healing capabilities like Heal Plus.
- Rita: Maximize her magical damage with skills like Magic Plus, Spell End, and Concentrate.
- Raven: A versatile character, Raven benefits from both physical and magical attack skills, as well as support skills like Item Pro.
Appearance Customization: Titles and Attachments
Beyond combat effectiveness, you can also customize your characters' looks. This is primarily done through acquiring and equipping Titles and Attachments.
Titles: More Than Just Stats
Titles are awarded for various achievements throughout the game, from story progression to completing side quests and performing well in battle. Each title grants a small stat bonus and, crucially, often changes a character's appearance.
- How to Equip: Access the "Titles" menu from the main menu. Select a character, then choose from their unlocked titles. The appearance change will be visible immediately.
- Examples:
- Yuri's "Dark Enforcer" Title: Unlocked after a specific story event, this title gives Yuri a distinct, more serious look.
- Estelle's "Noble Princess" Title: Often acquired early, it maintains her regal appearance.
- Karol's "Little Hunter" Title: Reflects his role in the Hunting Blades.
- Finding Titles: Many titles are obtained automatically, but others require specific actions:
- Secret Missions: Completing all Secret Missions for a boss often rewards a unique title.
- Coliseum: Conquering various ranks in the Nordopolica Coliseum yields titles for your fighters.
- Side Quests: Many optional events and character-specific side quests will unlock new titles. Always talk to NPCs in towns after major story events!
Attachments: The Finer Details
Attachments are cosmetic items that can be equipped to characters to further personalize their look. These range from glasses and hats to unique accessories.
- How to Equip: In the "Equipment" menu, select a character and then navigate to the "Attachments" option. You can equip up to two attachments per character.
- Acquiring Attachments:
- Synthesis: Many attachments are created through the Synthesis system at shops. You'll need specific materials, often dropped by monsters or found in chests. For example, the Monocle can be synthesized from common materials.
- Chests: Keep an eye out for hidden chests in dungeons and towns; they often contain unique attachments.
- Side Quests & Mini-Games: Some attachments are rewards for completing specific side quests or excelling in mini-games, such as the various prizes from the Hot Springs event.
- Grade Shop: In New Game+, you can purchase certain attachments from the Grade Shop.
- Popular Attachments:
- Glasses: Available for most characters, often synthesized.
- Hats: Various styles can be found or synthesized.
- Dog Ears/Tail: A fan-favorite, often found through specific side quests or synthesis later in the game.
Experiment with different combinations of titles and attachments to give your favorite characters a unique flair that matches your playstyle or simply your aesthetic preferences!
