Game Mechanics Overview
Welcome, aspiring heroes of Rieze Maxia! This section delves deep into the core mechanics of Tales of Xillia, providing you with the essential knowledge to master its intricate systems. Understanding these elements is crucial for successful progression, especially as you face increasingly challenging foes and complex dungeons.
The Lilium Orb: Your Path to Power
The Lilium Orb is Tales of Xillia's unique character progression system. Think of it as a web of interconnected nodes, each representing a stat increase, a new skill, or a powerful Arte. As your characters gain experience from battles, they earn Growth Points (GP).
- Earning Growth Points (GP): GP is primarily acquired by defeating enemies. Stronger enemies and boss encounters yield significantly more GP.
- Unlocking Nodes: To unlock a node, you must spend GP. The cost varies depending on the node's position and the power of the skill/stat it grants. Navigate the Lilium Orb by selecting a character from the main menu, then choosing "Lilium Orb."
- Connecting Nodes: Nodes are unlocked sequentially. You must unlock an adjacent node before you can access the next one. Plan your progression carefully to prioritize key stats or Artes for your current party composition.
- Bonus Nodes: Keep an eye out for special "Bonus Nodes" that offer significant stat boosts or unlock powerful "Support Skills" (explained below). These are often located at the intersections of multiple paths.
- Recommended Early Unlocks:
- Jude: Prioritize "Snap Pivot" and "Recovery Dive" for evasive maneuvers and quick healing. Focus on Strength and Agility nodes.
- Milla: Unlock "Spirit Surge" and "Binding Sphere" early for effective area-of-effect damage and crowd control. Boost Intelligence and Spirit.
- Alvin: "Charge" and "Power Shot" are excellent for burst damage. Invest in Strength and Vitality.
Combat System: Linked Artes and Over Limit
Combat in Tales of Xillia is real-time and dynamic, emphasizing strategic linking of characters to unleash devastating attacks.
Basic Combat Actions
- Normal Attacks: Press the X button (PS3) for a rapid series of physical strikes. These build the "Assault Counter" (AC).
- Artes: Hold L1 (PS3) and press a face button (X, Circle, Square, Triangle) to execute a pre-assigned Arte. Artes consume Technical Points (TP).
- Guard: Hold R1 (PS3) to block incoming attacks, reducing damage and preventing stagger.
- Evade: Flick the left analog stick while guarding to perform a quick sidestep or backstep, useful for avoiding unblockable attacks.
Linked Combat
The heart of Tales of Xillia's combat lies in its Link System. By linking two characters, they gain access to powerful "Linked Artes" and provide mutual support.
- Linking: Press R2 (PS3) to link with a chosen party member. The linked partner will automatically assist in combat.
- Linked Artes: When linked, performing certain Artes will trigger a "Linked Arte" if your partner has a compatible Arte and enough "Link Gauge" built up. These are often more powerful and have unique effects. Pay attention to the on-screen prompts during battle.
- Link Gauge: This gauge fills as you perform normal attacks and Artes while linked. A full Link Gauge allows for more frequent and powerful Linked Artes.
- Support Skills: Each character possesses unique Support Skills that activate when linked. For example, Jude's "Snap Pivot" allows him to quickly switch places with his linked partner, dodging attacks. Milla's "Binding Sphere" can bind enemies, preventing them from moving.
- Strategic Linking: Experiment with different link partners to find synergies. Linking Jude with Milla can create a powerful offensive and defensive duo, while linking Alvin with Leia can provide sustained damage and healing.
Over Limit
The "Over Limit" state is a temporary power boost that significantly enhances your combat capabilities.
- Building the Over Limit Gauge: The gauge fills as you take damage, deal damage, and perform Linked Artes.
- Activating Over Limit: Once the gauge is full, press L2 (PS3) to enter Over Limit.
- Benefits of Over Limit:
- Infinite TP for the duration.
- Immunity to stagger.
- Increased damage output.
- Ability to chain multiple Artes and Linked Artes without interruption.
- Maximizing Over Limit: Save Over Limit for boss battles or challenging enemy groups. Unleash your most powerful Artes and Linked Artes during this period for maximum impact.
Equipment and Customization
Proper equipment is vital for survival in Rieze Maxia. Pay close attention to item stats and character proficiencies.
- Weapons and Armor: Found in chests, dropped by enemies, or purchased from shops. Always equip the best available gear for each character.
- Accessories: Provide various stat boosts and special effects. Some, like the "Spirit Symbol" (found in the Hamil area early on), can significantly reduce TP consumption.
- Food: Purchased from shops or cooked at campsites. Food provides temporary stat buffs and can restore HP/TP after battles. Always keep a good stock of "Omurice" for TP recovery or "Steak" for Strength boosts.
- Shop Upgrades: As you progress through the story, shops in towns like Hamil and Fennmont will upgrade their inventory, offering stronger weapons, armor, and accessories. Check back frequently!
The World Map and Exploration
Rieze Maxia is a vast world with many secrets to uncover. Don't rush through the main story; exploration is often rewarded.
- Chests: Look for sparkling chests in every area. These often contain valuable equipment, items, or Gald (the in-game currency).
- Materials: Scattered throughout the environment, glowing points indicate collectible materials. These are crucial for the "Shop Order" system (explained below).
- Hidden Areas: Some areas have hidden paths or secret rooms that can only be accessed by interacting with specific objects or using certain character abilities. Keep an eye out for suspicious-looking walls or ledges.
- Side Quests: Talk to NPCs with speech bubbles above their heads in towns and cities. Many offer side quests that provide Gald, items, or even new Artes.
Shop Orders: Boosting Local Economies
The "Shop Order" system allows you to contribute materials to local shops, upgrading their inventory and offering better prices.
- Collecting Materials: Gather materials from glowing points on the world map or as enemy drops. Examples include "Soft Stone" from the Hamil area or "Hard Wood" from the Nia Khera region.
- Contributing Materials: Visit any shop and select the "Shop Order" option. You can contribute materials to upgrade the Weapon Shop, Armor Shop, Accessory Shop, or Item Shop.
- Benefits: Upgrading shops unlocks new, more powerful items for purchase and can sometimes reduce the cost of existing items. Prioritize upgrading the Weapon and Armor shops early on to keep your party well-equipped.
