Elemental Weaknesses and Resistances
Mastering the elemental system in Tales of Zestiria is crucial for efficient combat and overcoming challenging encounters. Every enemy in the game possesses an elemental affinity, making them either weak or resistant to specific types of damage. Exploiting these weaknesses will allow you to deal significantly more damage and stagger foes, creating openings for powerful combos and Artes. Conversely, hitting an enemy with a resisted element will result in reduced damage and less effective combat.
Understanding Elemental Affinities
There are four primary elements in Tales of Zestiria, each with a corresponding weakness and resistance:
- Fire: Strong against Wind, Weak against Water.
- Water: Strong against Fire, Weak against Earth.
- Earth: Strong against Water, Weak against Wind.
- Wind: Strong against Earth, Weak against Fire.
This creates a cyclical relationship: Fire beats Wind, Wind beats Earth, Earth beats Water, and Water beats Fire. Always aim to hit an enemy with the element they are weak to for maximum impact.
Identifying Enemy Weaknesses
Before engaging in combat, it's essential to identify an enemy's elemental weaknesses. Here's how you can do it:
- First Encounter: The first time you encounter a new enemy type, their weaknesses and resistances will be unknown. You'll need to experiment with different elemental Artes.
- Battle Information: During battle, you can pause the game and navigate to the "Enemy Info" section. This will display any weaknesses or resistances you've already discovered for that enemy.
- Lailah's "Scan" Skill: Lailah, as a Seraph of Fire, possesses the "Scan" skill. Using this skill in battle will reveal an enemy's elemental properties, including their weaknesses and resistances, making subsequent encounters much easier. This is particularly useful for boss battles or formidable Hellions.
Exploiting Weaknesses: Practical Strategies
Once you know an enemy's weakness, tailor your party's Artes and Armatization strategy accordingly:
1. Armatization for Elemental Advantage
Armatization is your most powerful tool for elemental exploitation. Each Seraph has a distinct elemental affinity, and Armatizing with them grants Sorey access to powerful elemental Artes:
- Lailah (Fire): Armatize with Lailah to unleash devastating Fire-based Artes. Ideal for enemies weak to Fire (e.g., Wind-aligned Hellions).
- Mikleo (Water): Armatize with Mikleo for potent Water-elemental attacks. Excellent against Fire-aligned foes.
- Edna (Earth): Armatize with Edna to utilize Earth-based Artes, perfect for enemies weak to Earth (e.g., Water-aligned Hellions).
- Dezel/Zaveid (Wind): Armatize with Dezel (or Zaveid later in the game) to employ powerful Wind Artes. Crucial for enemies weak to Wind (e.g., Earth-aligned Hellions).
Walkthrough Tip: When facing the Boar Hellion in the Aroundight Forest, you'll notice it's weak to Water. Armatize with Mikleo and spam his Water-elemental Artes like Aqua Serpent or Splash for quick staggers and significant damage.
2. Seraphic Artes and Support
Even without Armatizing, your Seraphim can contribute significantly with their elemental Artes. Ensure your Seraphim are equipped with Artes that cover various elements to provide versatile support.
- Mikleo's Aqua Serpent: A fantastic early-game Water Art.
- Lailah's Flame Wall: Great for hitting multiple enemies with Fire damage.
3. Equipment and Skills
Certain equipment pieces and skills can enhance your elemental damage or provide resistance:
- Elemental Attack Skills: Look for equipment with skills like "Flame Attack," "Aqua Attack," etc., to boost damage of that specific element. These can be found on various weapons and armor dropped by enemies or purchased from merchants. For example, a Blazing Sword (found in Mt. Mabinogio Ruins or crafted) often carries Fire-related skills.
- Elemental Defense Skills: Conversely, equip items with "Flame Defense," "Aqua Defense," etc., to mitigate damage from specific elements, especially useful against bosses with strong elemental attacks. The Earth Ring (found in Lakehaven Heights) provides Earth resistance, which is invaluable against Earth-aligned Hellions.
- Stacking Skills: Don't forget the Fusion system! By fusing equipment, you can stack identical skills to create more powerful versions, further enhancing your elemental prowess or defense. Aim for skill stacks that align with the elemental weaknesses of the area's prevalent enemies.
Dealing with Resistances
While exploiting weaknesses is ideal, sometimes you'll encounter enemies resistant to your primary damage type. In these situations:
- Switch Seraphim: If your current Armatization partner's element is resisted, disarmatize and Armatize with a different Seraph whose element is neutral or, ideally, super-effective.
- Physical Attacks: If all your elemental options are resisted, focus on physical attacks with Sorey or Rose. Ensure their equipment has high Attack stats.
- Non-Elemental Artes: Some Artes, particularly certain Hidden Artes, may not carry a strong elemental affinity, making them viable against resistant foes.
By consistently analyzing enemy weaknesses and adapting your combat strategy, you'll navigate the world of Zestiria with greater ease and efficiency, turning even the toughest Hellions into manageable encounters.
