Rat King
The Rat King is a tricky boss who relies on his agility and his rodent companions to overwhelm the Turtles. This encounter takes place in a grimy, sewer-like arena, so be prepared for close-quarters combat.
Phase 1: Rodent Rush
The Rat King begins by summoning a swarm of his loyal rat minions. These aren't just fodder; they can deal surprising damage if you're not careful. Your primary goal here is crowd control and creating openings to strike the Rat King himself.
- Clear the Swarm: Focus on quick, wide-reaching attacks like the Spin Attack (Jump + Attack) or a well-timed Dash Attack (Dash + Attack) to thin out the rat numbers. Don't get cornered by them.
- Rat King's Opening: While his rats are attacking, the Rat King will often stand back, occasionally throwing a Smoke Bomb that briefly obscures vision and can stun you. Use this moment to dash in and land a quick combo.
- Prioritize Damage: After clearing a significant portion of the rats, the Rat King will become more vulnerable. Look for opportunities to unleash your Super Attack (Special + Attack) for significant damage. Remember, Super Attacks consume your special meter, so use them strategically.
Phase 2: Direct Confrontation
Once you've dealt enough damage or cleared a few waves of rats, the Rat King will engage you directly. He's fast and has a few distinct moves you need to watch out for.
- Staff Swings: The Rat King wields a staff and will perform quick, multi-hit combos. Block these (Hold Block) or dodge roll (Dash + Jump) through them to get behind him.
- Leaping Strike: He'll occasionally leap into the air and slam down, creating a small shockwave. Jump over this or dash out of the impact zone. This is a good opening for a counter-attack as he recovers.
- Rat Call: Even in this phase, he'll periodically whistle, summoning more rats to aid him. Treat these like in Phase 1 – clear them quickly to prevent being overwhelmed.
General Strategies & Tips
- use the Environment: While there aren't many interactive elements in this arena, keep an eye out for any Pizza Boxes that might drop from defeated enemies or appear on the edges of the screen. These are crucial for health regeneration.
- Teamwork (Co-op): If playing with friends, coordinate your attacks. One player can focus on clearing rats while another targets the Rat King, or you can set up Team-Up Attacks (Stand near a stunned enemy and press Special) for massive damage.
- Special Meter Management: Don't waste your special meter. Save your Super Attacks for when the Rat King is vulnerable or when you need to clear a large group of rats quickly. Your Taunt (Hold Special) can help replenish your meter, but only use it when safe.
- Patience is Key: The Rat King isn't a rush-down boss. Observe his patterns, dodge his attacks, and strike when you see an opening. Don't get greedy with your combos, as he can quickly retaliate.
- Health Items: Before entering the Rat King's lair, ensure you've collected any Pizza Slices or Full Pizzas from the preceding level segments. Every bit of health helps!
