Contaminated Gear & Decontamination
Contaminated Gear is the lifeblood of progression within The Division Resurgence's Dark Zone. Any item acquired from enemies or loot caches within this high-risk area is classified as contaminated and cannot be used or equipped until it undergoes a decontamination process. This mechanic serves as a core element of the Dark Zone's risk-reward loop. The visual indicator for contaminated gear is typically a distinct icon or color coding on the item's representation in your inventory. The primary method for decontaminating this gear is through successful extractions. When you call for an extraction helicopter at a desated zone, your contaminated items are loaded onto the chopper. If the extraction is successful, these items are then decontaminated and become usable in your inventory, ready to be equipped, recalibrated, or used for crafting.
The process of decontamination is directly tied to the extraction mechanic. Without a successful extraction, any contaminated gear you carry will be lost if you are defeated by enemies or other players. This creates a constant tension as you gather more valuable items. For example, finding a rare Exotic Chest Piece within the Dark Zone sificantly raises the stakes for your next extraction. Players often employ strategies to protect their contaminated loot during extractions. This can involve forming temporary alliances with other agents to defend the extraction zone or utilizing the environment for cover. It is also important to manage your inventory space; carrying too much contaminated gear can slow you down and make you a more attractive target. Some specialized skills or gear talents might offer minor benefits related to contaminated items, but the fundamental requirement for decontamination remains extraction. The risk of losing a valuable piece of gear, such as a High-End SMG, makes every extraction a critical moment in your Dark Zone experience.
