Disease and Cures
The sprawling lands of the Iliac Bay are as dangerous as they are vast, and not all threats come with a sword or spell. Disease is a very real and persistent danger in Daggerfall, capable of crippling your character and even leading to an untimely demise if left untreated. Understanding how to prevent, identify, and cure various ailments is crucial for any adventurer.
Contracting Diseases
Diseases are typically contracted through combat with certain creatures. Many undead, vermin, and monstrous beasts carry various afflictions. A successful hit from an infected foe has a chance to transmit a disease to your character. The specific disease contracted depends on the creature type. For instance, rats are notorious carriers of the debilitating Plague, while vampires can inflict Vampirism, a unique and powerful affliction.
Keep a close eye on your character's status screen. If you've recently been in a skirmish and notice a sudden drop in a particular attribute or a general feeling of weakness, you might be infected. Early detection is key to a swift recovery.
Common Diseases and Their Symptoms
While the full list of diseases is extensive, here are some of the more common and impactful ones you'll encounter:
- Plague: Often contracted from rats and other vermin. Symptoms include a significant drain on your character's Strength and Endurance, making combat and carrying capacity much more difficult.
- Fever: A common ailment, often from weaker undead. Causes a noticeable drop in your Agility and Intelligence, impacting your ability to hit targets and cast spells effectively.
- Paralysis: While not strictly a disease in the traditional sense, certain creatures (like spiders) can inflict paralysis, which temporarily renders you immobile. This is a critical condition that needs immediate attention, often through a specific potion or spell. High Elves possess a natural immunity to paralyzation, making them a strong choice for certain character builds.
- Wound Rot: A nasty infection that can lead to a steady drain on your health over time. Often contracted from various monstrous humanoids.
Curing Diseases
There are several reliable methods for curing diseases in Daggerfall, ranging from readily available potions to more specialized services.
1. Potions of Cure Disease
The most straightforward and often fastest way to cure a standard disease is with a Potion of Cure Disease. These can be found as loot in dungeons, purchased from alchemists, or occasionally rewarded for quests.
- Where to find them:
- Alchemist Shops: Every major town and city will have an alchemist. Look for the mortar and pestle icon on the town map. Potions of Cure Disease are usually stocked, though availability can vary.
- Dungeon Loot: Keep an eye out in chests, on defeated enemies, and in hidden stashes within dungeons.
- Quest Rewards: Some guild or temple quests may offer these potions as a reward.
- Strategy: Always carry at least one or two Potions of Cure Disease, especially before venturing into deep dungeons or areas known for disease-carrying creatures. They are relatively inexpensive and can save your life.
2. Temples and Healers
For a more reliable, albeit costly, cure, seek out a temple or a professional healer. These services are invaluable, especially if you're out of potions or dealing with a particularly stubborn affliction.
- Temple Services:
- Location: Temples are prominent buildings in most cities, identifiable by their unique architectural style.
- Cost: Curing a disease at a temple will cost you gold, with the price varying based on the severity of the disease and your standing with the temple's deity.
- Process: Simply approach a priest or priestess and select the "Cure Disease" option. They will inform you of the cost, and upon acceptance, your character will be instantly cured.
- Healers: Some smaller towns or specific establishments might have independent healers who offer similar services, though temples are generally the most common and reliable option.
3. Restoration Spells
For magic-users, the Cure Disease spell (within the Restoration school of magic) is an indispensable tool. This allows you to cure yourself on the go, provided you have enough Magicka.
- Learning the Spell: You can learn the Cure Disease spell from Mages Guilds or specific spell merchants.
- Magicka Management: Ensure you have sufficient Magicka reserves before relying solely on this method, especially in dangerous areas where you might need to cast other spells.
4. Lycanthropy and Vampirism
These are special cases. While often considered diseases, they offer unique benefits alongside their drawbacks. Curing them requires specific, often lengthy and dangerous, questlines. This guide will focus on standard diseases, but be aware that becoming a vampire or werewolf is a different beast entirely, with its own set of challenges and cures.
Prevention is Key
While cures are available, preventing disease in the first place is always the best strategy:
- Avoidance: If you know a dungeon is crawling with disease-ridden creatures, consider if you are adequately prepared.
- Resistances: Some races and character builds offer natural resistances to certain diseases or magical effects, which can reduce your chances of infection. For example, Bretons possess a natural resistance to magic, which can sometimes help against magical diseases.
- Sanitation (Roleplay): While not a game mechanic, remember that the world of Daggerfall is gritty. Be mindful of your surroundings!
By understanding the dangers of disease and having a plan for treatment, you can navigate the treacherous world of Daggerfall with greater confidence and ensure your adventurer remains hale and hearty.
