Diseases & Curses
Morrowind's world is fraught with peril, and not all threats come in the form of sharp steel or fiery spells. Diseases and curses can afflict your character, weakening them and imposing various detrimental effects. Understanding these afflictions and how to cure them is vital for survival on Vvardenfell.
Diseases are typically contracted from hostile creatures, particularly certain types of insects, rats, and undead. When you are afflicted with a disease, you will receive a notification, and a corresponding icon will appear in your status menu. The effects of diseases can range from minor stat reductions to sificant penalties that can cripple your combat effectiveness.
Common diseases include:
- Corprus: A particularly nasty and iconic disease in Morrowind, Corprus sificantly reduces Strength and Endurance while also causing a gradual health drain. It is famously incurable by normal means and is central to certain quests.
- Blight: Reduces Strength and Endurance, making you weaker and less resilient.
- Rockjoint: Decreases Strength and Agility, impacting your ability to deal damage and hit your targets.
- Ataxia: Lowers Agility and Speed, making you slower and less evasive.
- Redundancy: Reduces Intelligence and Willpower, impacting your Magicka reserves and regeneration.
- Drathas: Decreases Willpower and Endurance, affecting your magical resilience and health.
- Kagouti Bite: A disease that reduces Strength and Agility.
Curses are less common than diseases and are often tied to specific magical traps, powerful enemies, or cursed items. They can manifest in various ways, such as temporary attribute drains, skill penalties, or even the inability to use certain abilities.
Curing Diseases and Curses
Fortunately, most diseases and curses can be cured. The primary methods include:
- Restoration Spells: Spells like 'Cure Common Disease' and 'Cure Blight Disease' are essential. Higher-level Restoration spells can cure more severe afflictions.
- Potions: Alchemists can craft potions that cure specific diseases. Keep a stock of these on hand.
- Alchemical Ingredients: Certain ingredients, when consumed, can provide temporary or permanent cures. For example, Kwama Eggs can cure Common Disease.
- Shrines: Temples and shrines dedicated to the Tribunal or other deities often offer services to cure diseases and curses for a fee.
- Unique Quests/Items: Some specific curses or diseases, like Corprus, require unique quest solutions or powerful artifacts to overcome.
Pay close attention to the messages you receive when afflicted. The game will usually tell you what type of disease or curse you have contracted, guiding you towards the appropriate cure. Always have a Restoration spell or a reliable supply of cure potions ready, especially when venturing into dangerous dungeons or facing unknown creatures.
