Shield Usage & Effectiveness
In the world of Morrowind, shields offer a sificant defensive advantage, providing a tangible increase in your character's ability to withstand enemy attacks. While not every build will prioritize them, understanding their effectiveness and how to use them can be a game-changer, especially for characters who rely on survivability.
Shields primarily contribute to your Armor Rating, which directly reduces incoming physical damage. The higher your Armor Rating, the less damage you will take from melee and ranged attacks. Different types of shields exist, varying in weight, material, and the amount of Armor Rating they provide. Heavier shields generally offer more protection but can also increase your encumbrance and potentially slow you down.
The effectiveness of a shield is also tied to your character's skill in Block. Investing points in the Block skill increases your chance to successfully block an incoming attack, further reducing or negating damage. A character with a high Block skill and a sturdy shield can become incredibly resilient on the battlefield, capable of weathering blows that would fell less-prepared adventurers.
While shields are primarily defensive, some enchanted shields can offer additional benefits. For example, a shield might be enchanted to provide resistance to magic, boost your Magicka, or even reflect spells. The Lodorr's Crown, found in the Hall of the Dead, while a crown, might be indicative of powerful defensive or protective enchantments that could be found on headwear or other defensive gear. Similarly, items found in dangerous locations like the Bonesnap Ruins might include shields with unique, protective enchantments.
For characters who prefer a more defensive playstyle, or for those facing particularly challenging enemies, incorporating a shield into your loadout is highly recommended. Pairing a shield with a one-handed weapon allows for a balanced approach to combat, offering both offensive capability and robust protection. Experiment with different shield types and consider investing in the Block skill to maximize your defensive potential and survive the harshest encounters Morrowind has to offer.
