Attributes and Skills

The foundation of your character's capabilities in Morrowind lies in the intricate interplay between Attributes and Skills. Attributes are your character's inherent raw potential, while Skills represent learned proficiencies. Together, they dictate your success in combat, magic, social interactions, and virtually every other action you undertake in the game world.

Attributes are the bedrock of your character, influencing how effectively you can use your skills. A higher attribute score generally means a higher base chance of success when using a related skill. Skills, on the other hand, are what you actively improve through training, practice, and leveling up. Investing in the right combination of attributes and skills is crucial for developing a character that als with your desired playstyle.

Your character possesses eight core Attributes:

  • Strength (STR): Affects melee damage, melee attack success, and the amount you can carry.
  • Intelligence (INT): Governs Magicka capacity and the effectiveness of certain spells.
  • Willpower (WIL): Influences spellcasting success, Magicka recovery, and resistance to certain magical effects.
  • Agility (AGI): Affects ranged attack success, melee attack success, defense against attacks, and the effectiveness of stealth skills.
  • Speed (SPD): Determines movement speed, attack speed, and fatigue recovery rate.
  • Endurance (END): Impacts Health per level, fatigue, and resistance to poison and disease.
  • Personality (PER): Governs Speechcraft success, Mercantile prices, and NPC disposition.
  • Luck (LCK): Affects the success of all actions to a small degree, making it a universally beneficial attribute.

Morrowind features a wide array of Skills, categorized into Combat, Magic, and General skills. Each skill has a starting value based on your chosen race and class, and can be increased through training, using the skill in-game, and by gaining levels.

Combat Skills:

  • Long Blade, Short Blade, Blunt Weapon, Axe, Spear
  • Light Armor, Medium Armor, Heavy Armor, Block
  • Archery

Magic Skills:

  • Destruction, Mysticism, Alteration, Conjuration, Illusion, Restoration
  • Alchemy, Enchant

General Skills:

  • Sneak, Security, Speechcraft, Mercantile, Athletics, Acrobatics

Key Interactions:

  • Attribute & Skill Synergy: Your attribute score provides a base modifier for your skill. For example, a high Strength attribute makes it easier to succeed with a Long Blade.
  • Leveling Up: When you level up, you gain attribute points based on the skills you've increased since your last level. To maximize attribute gains, focus on increasing skills related to the attributes you wish to boost.
  • Dice Rolls: Most actions in Morrowind are resolved with a dice roll. The formula typically involves your skill level, the relevant attribute modifier, and a random element.

Careful consideration of your attribute distribution and skill selection during character creation and throughout your playthrough is essential for building a powerful and effective character in Morrowind.
