Stealth and Thievery
While Morrowind often encourages direct confrontation, a skilled thief or assassin can thrive by employing stealth and cunning. The game features mechanics for sneaking, picking locks, disarming traps, and pilfering goods without detection. Mastering these skills can open up unique gameplay opportunities and allow you to bypass difficult combat encounters.
The Sneak Skill
The Sneak skill is fundamental to stealth gameplay. To sneak, you must activate the sneak mode (usually by pressing a dedicated key). While sneaking, your movement speed is reduced, but your visibility to enemies is sificantly diminished. The effectiveness of your sneak is influenced by several factors:
- Your Sneak Skill: Higher skill means you are harder to detect.
- Your Agility: A higher Agility attribute makes you more adept at moving silently.
- Light Levels: Darkness provides a sificant advantage for stealth.
- Enemy Awareness: Enemies have a cone of vision. Moving outside this cone or staying in shadows makes you less likely to be spotted.
- Noise: Running or performing actions that create noise can alert nearby enemies.
Successfully sneaking past enemies allows you to avoid combat or position yourself for a surprise attack. Some powerful attacks, like backstabs with daggers, deal sificantly more damage when performed from stealth.
Security Skills: Lockpicking and Trap Disarming
The Security skill governs your ability to interact with locked containers and disarm traps. You will need Thieves' Tools (lockpicks and probes) to attempt these actions.
- Lockpicking: When you attempt to pick a lock, a mini-game or dice roll will occur, influenced by your Security skill, Agility, and the quality of your Thieves' Tools. Success allows you to open chests, doors, and other containers, often yielding valuable loot. Failure can result in breaking your tools or triggering an alarm.
- Trap Disarming: Traps are common in dungeons and can inflict damage, status effects, or alert enemies. Your Security skill and Agility play a role in successfully disarming them. Failure can be dangerous, so it's often wise to approach traps with caution.
Pickpocketing
While not as prominent as in some other Elder Scrolls games, Morrowind does allow for pickpocketing. This skill is tied to your Sneak and Agility. Successfully pickpocketing an NPC allows you to steal items from their inventory without them noticing. This is a risky endeavor, as failure can lead to immediate detection and combat.
Thieves Guild and Morag Tong
The Thieves Guild and the Morag Tong are the primary organizations for those who prefer a life of crime and subterfuge. Joining these guilds provides access to specialized training, unique equipment, and a series of quests tailored to stealth and thievery.
- Thieves Guild: Focuses on burglary, smuggling, and general illicit activities.
- Morag Tong: An ancient guild of assassins who operate with the blessing of the Tribunal. Their quests often involve political assassinations and require a degree of discretion.
To excel in stealth and thievery, consider investing in skills like Sneak, Security, Short Blade (for daggers), and Light Armor. Potions that enhance Agility, Chameleon, or Invisibility can also be invaluable tools for any aspiring rogue.
