Character Creation & Progression — The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Guide

Your journey in Morrowind begins with a robust character creation system that allows for deep customization. The choices you make during this initial phase—race, class, births, and skill selection—lay the foundation for your character's development and how you will navigate the challenges of Vvardenfell. Progression is driven by skill usage and strategic attribute increases.

Character Creation:

  1. Race: Each race offers unique attribute bonuses and racial abilities. For example, Dunmer have fire resistance and bonuses to magic, while Nords excel in combat with frost resistance.
  2. Class: You can choose from pre-made classes or create a custom one. Classes determine your starting skills and attribute distribution. A warrior might favor a class with high Strength and Endurance, while a mage would focus on Intelligence and Willpower.
  3. Births: Your births grants passive bonuses, such as attribute boosts (e.g., The Warrior for Strength) or magical enhancements (e.g., The Apprentice for Magicka).
  4. Skills: You select several Major and Minor skills. Major skills increase faster and are crucial for leveling up efficiently. Minor skills improve with use but at a slower rate.

Character Progression:

Morrowind's progression system is based on skill usage and attribute management:

  • Skill Improvement: Skills increase as you use them. The more you swing a sword, cast a spell, or sneak, the higher that skill becomes.
  • Leveling Up: Gaining enough experience through skill use allows you to level up. At each level-up, you can increase your Attributes.
  • Attribute Increases: The amount you can increase an Attribute is determined by how many skills associated with that Attribute you have improved since your last level-up. For example, to maximize a Strength increase, you should have raised several Strength-based skills (like Long Blade, Blunt Weapon) since your last level-up.

Strategic Development:

Careful planning is key. If you want to be a powerful warrior, focus on combat skills and prioritize Strength and Endurance. For a potent mage, concentrate on magic skills and boost Intelligence and Willpower. A balanced approach is also viable, but specialization often yields more potent results in specific areas. Always consider how your skill choices will impact your attribute gains upon leveling up.
