Gold & Bartering System — The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Guide

Navigate Morrowind's gold and bartering system. Learn how merchant gold, disposition, and Speechcraft influence your transactions.

Gold & Bartering System

Gold is the primary currency in Morrowind, used for purchasing goods, services, and bribing NPCs. The game features a robust bartering system where You can negotiate prices with merchants, influenced by factors such as their Personality, Speechcraft skill, and the merchant's disposition towards them.

Merchants in Morrowind have a limited amount of gold they can spend on buying items from you, and a limited amount of gold they have available to sell items to you. This means that selling large quantities of items can deplete a merchant's gold, making them less willing to buy more from you until they restock. Conversely, buying many items can deplete their stock. You can often find merchants who specialize in certain types of goods, such as weapons, armor, alchemical ingredients, or spells.

To maximize your profits and minimize your expenses, it's beneficial to improve your Personality and Speechcraft skills. High Personality increases the base disposition of NPCs towards you, making them more amenable to better prices. The Speechcraft skill allows for more direct negotiation. Some quests also offer unique bartering opportunities or rewards that can sificantly boost your gold reserves. Understanding these mechanics is key to accumulating wealth and acquiring the best gear.
