Money Making & Economy
In the vast and often dangerous lands of Vvardenfell, gold is a crucial resource. Whether you're seeking to purchase powerful artifacts, train your skills, or simply afford a comfortable bed for the night, a steady income stream is essential. This section will detail various strategies for accumulating wealth, from early-game hustles to late-game economic dominance.
Early Game Riches (Levels 1-10)
Starting out, your pockets will likely be lighter than a Kwama Forager's conscience. Focus on low-risk, high-reward activities.
1. Smuggling & Petty Theft
- Balmora's Back Alleys: Many shops in Balmora, particularly those in the less-trafficked areas, have unguarded goods. Look for items like Expensive Pants, Expensive Shirts, and various alchemical ingredients. Be wary of guards; a high Sneak skill is beneficial.
- Seyda Neen Lighthouse: The lighthouse in Seyda Neen, accessible early in the game, contains a few valuable items. Look for a Silver Dagger and some gold in chests. Be discreet.
- "Fargoth's Hiding Place": After completing the initial quest for Arrille in Seyda Neen, you can find Fargoth's ring and some gold hidden in a tree stump near the lighthouse. This is a quick, easy score.
- "The Creeper" in Ghorak Manor (Caldera): This scamp merchant has 5000 gold and buys items at their base value, making him excellent for offloading stolen goods without reputation penalties. He's located on the upper floor of Ghorak Manor in Caldera.
2. Ingredient Gathering & Alchemy
Alchemy is a potent money-maker, even with low skill. Many common ingredients are valuable.
- Scamp Skin: Found on Scamps, common in caves and tombs. They fetch a decent price and are lightweight.
- Kwama Eggs: Abundant in Kwama mines (e.g., Genea Caves near Balmora). Collect as many as you can carry.
- Mushrooms: Various mushrooms like Saltrice, Marshmerrow, and Kresh Fiber are found throughout the Bitter Coast and Ascadian Isles. They are used in common potions and can be sold to alchemists or general merchants.
- Early Potions: Even simple potions like "Restore Fatigue" (e.g., using Saltrice and Marshmerrow) can be crafted and sold for more than their individual ingredients. Invest in a cheap Mortar and Pestle.
3. Dungeon Delving & Looting
Early dungeons often contain valuable weapons, armor, and trinkets.
- Ancestral Tombs: These are plentiful across Vvardenfell. While often guarded by undead, they frequently contain valuable Dwemer artifacts, enchanted items, and gold. Prioritize lightweight, high-value items.
- Bandit Caves: Caves like the one near Pelagiad often house bandits with decent gear. Clear them out and sell their weapons and armor.
- Dwemer Ruins: While more challenging, even the outer sections of Dwemer ruins can yield Dwemer coins, scrap metal, and valuable artifacts.
Mid-Game Investments & Exploits (Levels 11-25)
As your skills grow, so too should your financial ambitions. Look for more efficient and larger-scale methods.
1. Enchanting & Soul Gems
Enchanting is incredibly lucrative, especially if you can capture powerful souls.
- Soul Gems: Purchase empty Soul Gems from enchanters or general merchants.
- Soultrap Spell: Acquire a Soultrap spell (e.g., from Llarar Bereloth in Balmora's Temple).
- Creature Hunting: Hunt creatures like Golden Saints (found in Daedric ruins like Ald Sotha) or Ascended Sleepers (in Dagoth Ur's facilities). Their grand souls fetch immense prices when enchanted into items.
- Enchanting Items: Enchant cheap items (e.g., common rings, amulets) with powerful effects using captured souls. Even a simple "Fortify Attribute" enchantment with a Grand Soul can sell for tens of thousands of gold.
2. High-Value Item Flipping
Exploit merchant gold limits and varying prices.
- Mudcrab Merchant: This legendary merchant, found on a small island east of Vivec's St. Olms Canton, has 10,000 gold and buys items at base value. He's ideal for selling high-value enchanted items or expensive artifacts.
- Creeper (Ghorak Manor, Caldera): As mentioned, Creeper is another excellent merchant with 5,000 gold and base value purchases. Use both him and the Mudcrab Merchant to offload your most valuable loot.
- Restoration Loop (Advanced Alchemy): For those willing to delve into advanced alchemy, creating powerful Fortify Intelligence potions allows you to craft incredibly potent Fortify Alchemy potions. This can lead to creating potions that restore hundreds of points of health or magicka, which sell for astronomical sums. This is often considered an exploit due to its power.
3. Guild Quests & Faction Rewards
Joining guilds provides not only quest rewards but also access to trainers, merchants, and unique items.
- Fighters Guild: Quests often involve clearing out dungeons or killing creatures, providing both gold rewards and loot.
- Mages Guild: Quests can involve retrieving artifacts or ingredients, often leading to valuable finds.
- Thieves Guild: Focuses on stealing and fencing, directly contributing to your gold reserves.
- House Redoran/Hlaalu/Telvanni: Advancing in a Great House offers significant gold rewards and access to powerful artifacts.
Late Game Economic Dominance (Levels 25+)
By this stage, you should have a solid financial foundation. Focus on maximizing efficiency and exploiting the game's systems.
1. Daedric Artifact Hunting
Many Daedric artifacts are not only powerful but also incredibly valuable.
- Mehrunes' Razor: Found in the Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon.
- Ebony Mail: Reward for a difficult quest, but its value is immense.
- Daedric Weapons & Armor: These are some of the most valuable non-enchanted items in the game. Seek out Daedric ruins and high-level dungeons.
2. Fortify Barter/Speechcraft Exploits
By creating powerful Fortify Speechcraft or Fortify Barter potions/enchantments, you can significantly increase the selling price of your goods and decrease the purchase price of items.
- Custom Enchanted Items: Create an amulet or ring enchanted with "Fortify Speechcraft 100 pts for 1 sec" (or more). Equip it just before initiating a trade.
- Alchemy Loop for Potions: As mentioned in the mid-game section, the Restoration loop can create potions that fortify Speechcraft or Barter to absurd levels, allowing you to buy almost anything for 1 gold and sell anything for its maximum value.
3. Creating a "Home Base" for Loot
Designate a safe, container-rich location as your personal vault. This allows you to accumulate vast amounts of loot before making a single, highly profitable trip to the Mudcrab Merchant or Creeper.
- Rethan Manor (Hlaalu Stronghold): If you join House Hlaalu, this stronghold provides ample storage and a convenient location.
- Tel Uvirith (Telvanni Stronghold): Similar to Rethan Manor, this Telvanni stronghold offers significant storage.
- Vacant Houses: Many houses in towns like Balmora or Vivec can be "acquired" and used for storage once their previous occupants are dealt with. Just be mindful of ownership flags.
Remember, patience and persistence are key. Morrowind's economy, while exploitable, rewards careful planning and a keen eye for valuable loot. Happy adventuring, N'wah!
