Enchanting & Soul Gems
Enchanting is a powerful skill in Morrowind that allows players to imbue items with magical properties, creating custom enchanted gear. This process requires specific tools, knowledge of enchantments, and most importantly, soul gems filled with the souls of defeated creatures. Mastering enchanting can lead to incredibly powerful equipment and a sificant advantage in combat.
The Enchanting Process:
To enchant an item, you need:
- An Enchanted Item: This can be a weapon, armor piece, jewelry, or clothing.
- A Filled Soul Gem: The type of soul gem determines the strength of the enchantment.
- Access to an Enchanter: These are found in Mages Guild halls in major cities.
When you interact with an enchanter, you'll be presented with a list of available enchantments. You can choose an enchantment and then select a filled soul gem to power it. The strength of the enchantment is determined by the soul gem's capacity and the creature's soul within it.
Soul Gems:
Soul gems are containers that capture the souls of defeated creatures. Different types of soul gems have varying capacities:
- Petty Soul Gem: Holds the weakest souls (e.g., rats, scribs).
- Lesser Soul Gem: Holds slightly stronger souls (e.g., netches, goblins).
- Common Soul Gem: Holds average souls (e.g., trolls, daedra).
- Greater Soul Gem: Holds powerful souls (e.g., Daedra Lords, Daedroth).
- Grand Soul Gem: Holds the strongest souls (e.g., Golden Saints, Ascended Sleepers).
- Azura's Star: A unique, reusable soul gem that can hold any soul.
- Black Soul Gem: Can hold the souls of humanoids (NPCs), which are generally more powerful than creature souls.
Capturing Souls:
To capture a soul, you must have an empty soul gem in your inventory and cast a spell with the 'Soul Trap' effect on a creature before it dies. If successful, the creature's soul will be captured in the gem.
Available Enchantments:
The available enchantments depend on the creature whose soul is in the gem and your Enchanting skill. Common enchantments include:
- Attribute Fortification: Fortify Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, etc.
- Skill Fortification: Fortify Blade, Destruction, Alchemy, etc.
- Resistances: Resist Fire, Frost, Shock, Poison, Magic.
- Damage Effects: Damage Health, Damage Magicka.
- Restore Effects: Restore Health, Restore Magicka.
- Utility: Levitate, Water Walking, Invisibility.
Creating Custom Enchantments:
The most powerful enchantments are often custom-made. You can create your own enchantments by combining ingredients with desired effects and then using an enchanter. Experimentation is key to discovering the most potent combinations.
Tips for Enchanting:
- Save Before Enchanting: Enchanting can be unpredictable. Save your game before attempting a powerful enchantment.
- Use Grand Soul Gems: Always aim to use the largest soul gems possible for the strongest enchantments.
- Soul Trap is Essential: Keep a Soul Trap spell or enchanted item handy to fill your soul gems.
- Combine with Alchemy: Potions that fortify your Enchanting skill can lead to more powerful custom enchantments.
