Weapon Types & Their Characteristics
Morrowind features a diverse array of weapon types, each with its own set of characteristics, damage potential, and associated skills. Choosing the right weapon for your character build and understanding its strengths and weaknesses is paramount to effectively engaging in combat and overcoming the myriad threats Vvardenfell presents.
Weapons are categorized by their associated skills, which determine your proficiency with them. Using a weapon you are skilled with will result in more frequent hits and higher damage output. The primary weapon skills are:
- Long Blade: Versatile and powerful, long blades offer a good balance of speed and damage. They are favored by many warrior archetypes.
- Short Blade: Faster than long blades but generally dealing less damage per hit, short blades are ideal for characters who rely on quick strikes and critical hits.
- Axe: Axes often have a higher chance to stagger opponents, making them effective for controlling the battlefield.
- Blunt Weapon: Similar to axes, blunt weapons can be effective at staggering enemies and often have good damage.
- Spear: Spears offer good reach, allowing you to strike enemies from a slightly safer distance.
- Marksman (Ranged): This skill encompasses bows and crossbows, allowing you to engage enemies from afar, softening them up before closing the distance or picking off dangerous targets.
Beyond the skill association, weapons also have inherent characteristics:
| Characteristic | Description |
|---|---|
| Damage | The base amount of damage the weapon inflicts. Higher is generally better. |
| Speed | How quickly the weapon can be swung. Faster weapons allow for more attacks in a given time. |
| Reach | The distance at which the weapon can effectively strike an opponent. |
| Weight | Affects your encumbrance. Heavier weapons may also have higher damage. |
| Enchantment Slots | Some weapons can be enchanted with magical effects, adding elemental damage, stat bonuses, or other abilities. |
Weapon Acquisition:
You can acquire weapons through several means:
- Loot: Defeated enemies, particularly bandits and soldiers, often drop weapons.
- Merchants: Weapon merchants in cities and towns stock several arms.
- Quest Rewards: Some quests offer unique or powerful weapons as rewards.
- Crafting: While not a direct crafting system in Morrowind, you can find or purchase materials to repair and sometimes improve existing weapons.
Experiment with different weapon types to find what best suits your playstyle and character build. A well-chosen weapon, wielded with skill, is your most reliable ally against the dangers of Morrowind.
