Gods & Religion
Religion plays a pivotal role in the lives of the Dunmer people of Morrowind. The dominant faith centers around the Tribunal, the living gods who protect the land and its people. Understanding their dogma, their followers, and the ancient prophecies is key to navigating Vvardenfell's complex society.
The Tribunal consists of three divine beings: Almalexia, Sotha Sil, and Vivec. They are worshipped throughout Morrowind, with grand temples dedicated to them in major cities. Their influence extends to law, culture, and the very fabric of Dunmer society. However, ancient prophecies speak of a different destiny, one that challenges the Tribunal's divine authority.
The Tribunal
- Almalexia: The Mother Morrowind, goddess of compassion and mercy.
- Sotha Sil: The Enchanter, god of magic and knowledge.
- Vivec: The Warrior-Poet, god of justice and prophecy, and the most prominent figure in Dunmer society.
The Tribunal are believed to have ascended to godhood through the teachings of the prophet Alandro Sul and the use of the Heart of Lorkhan. They are seen as the protectors of Morrowind against the Blight and the machmortals of Dagoth Ur.
The Temple
The Tribunal Temple is the organized religious body that serves the Tribunal. It has a strong presence across Vvardenfell, with shrines and temples offering services such as healing, blessings, and quests. Joining the Temple allows you to participate in religious rites and gain divine favor.
- Temple Quests: Often involve aiding the faithful, combating heretics, or retrieving sacred artifacts.
- Divine Blessings: Temple priests can offer temporary buffs or healing.
- Pilgrimages: Undertaking pilgrimages to holy sites can earn favor and rewards.
Prophecy and the Nerevarine
Ancient prophecies speak of the Nerevarine, a reincarnation of the legendary Hortator Indoril Nerevar, who will rise to challenge the Tribunal and defeat Dagoth Ur. Your character is potentially this prophesied hero, and much of the game's main questline revolves around fulfilling these prophecies.
Other Deities and Beliefs
- Azura: A Daedric Prince who is revered by some Dunmer, particularly those who question the Tribunal's divinity. She is associated with the Nerevarine prophecy.
- Mephala and Boethiah: Other Daedric Princes who are also acknowledged and sometimes worshipped by certain factions within Dunmer society.
- Ancestor Worship: The Dunmer also hold deep reverence for their ancestors, with many tombs and ancestral spirits playing a role in their culture and beliefs.
The interplay between the Tribunal's divine rule, the ancient prophecies, and the influence of Daedric Princes creates a rich and complex religious landscape in Morrowind.
