Character Backstories & Motivations
While Morrowind allows players to create characters from scratch, understanding potential backstories and motivations can enrich the role-playing experience. Whether you're a noble hero, a cunning thief, or a reclusive mage, your character's past and driving forces shape their interactions with the world and its inhabitants.
Your character's journey begins as an unknown prisoner, but their potential is limitless. Consider what led them to Vardenfell and what they hope to achieve. These motivations can be simple or complex, personal or altruistic.
Here are some archetypal backstories and motivations to consider:
- The Disgraced Noble: Perhaps you were exiled from your homeland for a crime you didn't commit, or a political upheaval forced you into hiding. Your motivation might be to clear your name, reclaim your birthright, or simply find a new life away from your past. You might carry a sense of duty and honor, or a deep-seated resentment towards those who wronged you.
- The Aspiring Mage: Drawn to Vardenfell by rumors of powerful magic and ancient lore, you seek knowledge and mastery over the arcane arts. Your motivation is the pursuit of magical power, the discovery of forgotten spells, or perhaps a quest to cure a magical ailment. You might be driven by intellectual curiosity or a desire to wield immense power.
- The Ruthless Mercenary: You are a warrior for hire, skilled in combat and survival. Your motivation is profit and the thrill of battle. You might be looking for the ultimate payday, seeking to prove your prowess, or simply trying to survive in a harsh world. Loyalty might be a commodity, and your methods could be pragmatic rather than honorable.
- The Cunning Thief/Assassin: Operating in the shadows, you excel at stealth, subterfuge, and acquiring what isn't yours. Your motivation could be wealth, power through influence, or revenge. You might be seeking a legendary artifact, aiming to dismantle a corrupt organization, or simply honing your deadly craft.
- The Devout Pilgrim: You may have come to Vardenfell seeking spiritual enlightenment, to serve a particular deity, or to fulfill a divine prophecy. Your motivation is faith and service. You might be a devout follower of the Tribunal, a seeker of forbidden knowledge, or someone trying to understand the divine mysteries of the land.
Your character's race and class can also inform their backstory. A Dunmer might have deep-seated animosity towards the Empire, while an Imperial might feel a sense of duty to maintain order. A Nord might be a proud warrior seeking glory, while a Khajiit might be a shrewd merchant or a cunning rogue.
Consider how your character's past experiences have shaped their personality, their skills, and their relationships with the various factions and individuals they will encounter. This depth will make your journey through Morrowind far more engaging and personal.
