World & Lore
Morrowind is set in the province of Morrowind, the ancestral home of the Dunmer, or Dark Elves. This land is a stark contrast to the more familiar regions of Tamriel, characterized by its volcanic landscapes, ash storms, alien flora and fauna, and a deeply ingrained, complex culture shaped by ancient traditions, ancestor worship, and the divine rule of the Tribunal.
The world of Morrowind is diverse and often dangerous. From the sprawling cities like Vivec and Balmora to the desolate Ashlands and the mushroom forests of the Ascadian Isles, each region possesses a unique atmosphere and challenges. The Dunmer society is rigidly structured, with Great Houses holding sificant political power, while the Ashlanders maintain their nomadic, tribal ways, adhering to ancient prophecies and traditions. The Imperial presence, though sificant, often struggles to fully impose its will on the proud and independent Dunmer.
Central to Morrowind's lore is the concept of the Tribunal – the living gods Almalexia, Sotha Sil, and Vivec – who rose to divinity centuries ago. Their rule has shaped Dunmer religion and society, though their divine status is not without its detractors and mysteries, particularly concerning their origins and their ongoing conflict with Dagoth Ur and the Sixth House. The land itself is imbued with a sense of ancient power, from the ruins of the Dwemer to the sacred sites of the Ashlanders, all contributing to a rich and immersive world.
