Magic & Enchanting — The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Guide
Magic is an integral part of the Morrowind experience, offering a vast array of spells and the ability to imbue items with arcane power. Mastering the magic system, from learning new spells to crafting potent enchanted gear, is key to overcoming the many challenges Vvardenfell presents.
In Morrowind, magic is divided into several schools, each with its own unique spells and applications. These include Alteration (manipulating the physical world, such as opening locks or increasing attributes), Conjuration (summoning creatures and weapons), Destruction (dealing elemental damage), Illusion (affecting minds and senses, like invisibility or charm), Mysticism (teleportation, spell absorption, and detecting magic), Restoration (healing and curing ailments), and সরঞ্জাম (which is not a school of magic but rather a system for creating magical items). Spells are learned from spell vendors, found on scrolls, or can be custom-made at enchanting facilities. Your character's effectiveness with magic is determined by their Intelligence and Willpower attributes, as well as their skill in the relevant magic school.
Enchanting is a powerful system that allows you to create your own magical items. This process requires soul gems, which capture the souls of defeated creatures. These filled soul gems are then used with an enchanting skill to apply magical effects to weapons, armor, jewelry, and other items. The strength of the enchantment depends on the type of soul gem used (ranging from petty to grand soul gems), the caster's Enchant skill, and their Intelligence and Willpower. Custom enchantments can be created at special shrines or by using an Arcane Enchanter. The ability to create custom enchantments allows for highly specialized gear, such as items that grant constant regeneration of health or magicka, or weapons that deal massive amounts of elemental damage. Understanding the interplay between spell schools, attributes, skills, and enchanting is essential for any aspiring mage or even a combat-focused character looking to supplement their abilities with magical prowess.
