Faction Mechanics
Morrowind's political landscape is dominated by powerful Great Houses, Imperial organizations, and various guilds, each with their own agendas and hierarchies. Joining and progressing within these factions is a core aspect of the game, offering unique quests, rewards, and influence over the world.
The most prominent factions are the Great Houses: Hlaalu, Redoran, and Telvanni. Each house has distinct philosophies, territories, and strengths. Joining a Great House grants you access to their quests, unique items, and the ability to rise through their ranks. Your standing within a Great House can affect how other members and NPCs react to you.
- House Hlaalu: Known for their diplomacy, trade, and ties to the Empire. They are generally more pragmatic and adaptable.
- House Redoran: A proud and martial house, valuing honor, duty, and tradition. They are often found in the northern regions.
- House Telvanni: Reclusive and magically inclined mages who value knowledge and power above all else. They reside in mushroom towers and are known for their independence.
Beyond the Great Houses, several other sificant factions exist:
- The Imperial Legion: The military arm of the Tamrielic Empire, responsible for maintaining order and enforcing Imperial law on Vvardenfell. Joining the Legion offers combat-focused quests and opportunities for advancement.
- The Blades: The Emperor's secret service, tasked with protecting the Empire and its ruler. They often have covert operations and involve espionage.
- The Mages Guild: A pan-Tamrielic organization dedicated to the study and practice of magic. Joining the Mages Guild provides access to spellmaking, enchanting, and magical research quests.
- Fighters Guild: A mercenary organization that offers combat-related contracts, from monster hunting to bodyguard duties.
- Thieves Guild: A clandestine organization focused on illicit activities, such as burglary, smuggling, and assassination.
- Tribunal Temple: The dominant religious institution on Vvardenfell, worshipping the Tribunal. The Temple offers quests related to faith, healing, and combating heresy.
- Ashlander Tribes: Nomadic Dunmer who reject Imperial rule and the Tribunal's divinity. Interacting with them often involves proving your worth and understanding their ancient traditions.
Faction Progression and Reputation
Progression within factions is typically achieved by completing quests assed by faction leaders or superiors. Successfully completing quests increases your rank and reputation within that faction, unlocking new quests, better equipment, and access to higher-level services. Conversely, failing quests or acting against a faction's interests can lower your standing or even lead to expulsion.
Your reputation with a faction can also influence your interactions with its members outside of quests. High standing may lead to friendly greetings and discounts, while low standing can result in hostility or refusal of service.
Some factions have conflicting interests, meaning your actions in one faction might negatively impact your standing in another. For example, joining the Imperial Legion might displease the Ashlanders, and working for the Thieves Guild could put you at odds with the Fighters Guild.
