House Modifiers & Reputation

Understand House Modifiers and Reputation when joining Great Houses in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

House Modifiers & Reputation

Navigating the intricate political landscape of Morrowind's Great Houses is crucial for any aspiring adventurer. Your standing within a chosen House, as well as with the other two, directly impacts quest availability, NPC reactions, and even access to vital services. Understanding how House Modifiers and Reputation work is key to maximizing your influence and rewards.

Understanding House Modifiers

Each of the three Great Houses – Hlaalu, Redoran, and Telvanni – has a specific "House Modifier" associated with your character. This modifier is a numerical value that reflects your current standing with that particular House. It's distinct from your overall Reputation score, which is a global measure of your fame across Vvardenfell.

  • Initial Standing: When you first join a Great House, your modifier for that House will typically be 0. Your modifiers for the other two Houses will be -1.
  • Gaining Favor: Completing quests for your chosen House will increase its modifier. Each quest typically grants a +1 increase. For example, completing "The Disappearance of the Dwarven Artifacts" for House Hlaalu will raise your Hlaalu modifier.
  • Losing Favor: Actions detrimental to a House, such as failing quests, attacking their members, or completing quests for a rival House that directly harms their interests, can decrease their modifier.
  • Impact on Quests: Many higher-ranking House quests have a minimum House Modifier requirement. If your modifier is too low, the quest giver will refuse to offer the assignment.
  • Inter-House Relations: Be mindful that assisting one House can sometimes negatively impact your standing with another. For instance, if you're a member of House Hlaalu and complete a quest for House Redoran that involves seizing Hlaalu property, your Hlaalu modifier might decrease, and your Redoran modifier will increase.

Boosting Your Reputation (Global)

While House Modifiers are specific to each faction, your overall Reputation score is a global metric that influences how NPCs across Vvardenfell perceive you. A higher Reputation can lead to:

  • Better Disposition: NPCs will generally have a higher starting disposition towards you, making persuasion easier and reducing the cost of services.
  • Unique Dialogue: Certain NPCs may offer unique dialogue or quests if your Reputation is sufficiently high.
  • Fame and Recognition: Guards and common folk might comment on your deeds, recognizing you as a hero or a figure of importance.
Strategies for Gaining Reputation:
  1. Main Quest Progression: Advancing through the main storyline is a primary source of Reputation points. Each major milestone in the Nerevarine prophecy will significantly boost your fame.
  2. Faction Quests (Beyond Houses):
    • Guilds: Completing quests for the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, and Thieves Guild will award Reputation.
    • Temples: The Temple and Imperial Cult offer numerous quests that contribute to your global Reputation.
    • Imperial Legion: Joining and completing quests for the Imperial Legion will also increase your renown.
  3. Daedric Shrine Quests: Many Daedric Princes offer challenging quests that, upon completion, grant a substantial Reputation boost. Look for shrines like Azura's Shrine (near Dagon Fel) or Boethiah's Shrine (on a small island east of the Azura's Coast region).
  4. Miscellaneous Quests: Keep an eye out for smaller, independent quests offered by various NPCs throughout Vvardenfell. These often provide a modest Reputation increase. Examples include helping the Argonian slave in Pelagiad, or retrieving the Limeware Platter for the trader in Balmora.
  5. Killing Blight Creatures: While not a direct source of Reputation, eliminating Blight-ridden creatures and hostile beasts contributes to the safety of Vvardenfell, and some NPCs may acknowledge your efforts, indirectly boosting your standing.

Remember, a balanced approach to questing, involving both your chosen Great House and other factions, will ensure a strong House Modifier and a respectable global Reputation, opening up the fullest experience Morrowind has to offer.
