House Strongholds & Construction

Construct your stronghold in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Learn the building process unique to House Hlaalu, House Redoran, and House Telvanni.

House Strongholds & Construction

One of the most rewarding long-term goals in Morrowind is the construction of your very own stronghold. This privilege is reserved for members of the three Great Houses: House Hlaalu, House Redoran, and House Telvanni. Each house offers a unique stronghold design, reflecting their distinct architectural styles and philosophies. Building a stronghold is a multi-stage process that requires significant financial investment, political maneuvering, and a strong reputation within your chosen House.

Prerequisites for Stronghold Construction

Before you can even dream of laying a foundation, you must meet several key requirements:

  • Join a Great House: This is non-negotiable. You must be a member of House Hlaalu, House Redoran, or House Telvanni.
  • Achieve a High Rank: You'll need to reach a specific rank within your House to unlock the stronghold questline. Typically, this means reaching the rank of Kinsman (Hlaalu), Oathman (Redoran), or Mouth (Telvanni) for the initial construction phase. Subsequent upgrades will require even higher ranks.
  • Complete House Quests: You must complete a series of quests for your House leaders to prove your loyalty and capability. These quests often involve resolving disputes, eliminating threats, or retrieving important artifacts.
  • Financial Resources: Stronghold construction is expensive. You'll need tens of thousands of gold for each stage of construction and additional funds for furnishings and staff. Start saving early!

The Construction Process: A General Overview

Once you meet the prerequisites, the construction process generally follows these steps, though specific details vary by House:

  1. Initial Land Grant: Your House will grant you a plot of land suitable for construction. This usually comes after completing a significant quest or reaching a certain rank.
  2. First Construction Phase: You'll be tasked with funding the initial construction of your stronghold. This typically involves speaking to a specific architect or foreman and paying a substantial sum of gold.
  3. Defense and Development: During and after construction, your stronghold may face threats from bandits, rival Houses, or local wildlife. You'll often be asked to resolve these issues.
  4. Second Construction Phase (Upgrades): As you gain higher ranks within your House, you'll unlock further upgrades for your stronghold, adding more rooms, defenses, and amenities.
  5. Final Touches and Furnishings: While not directly part of the questline, you'll want to furnish your stronghold to make it a true home. This involves purchasing items from various vendors or finding unique pieces during your adventures.

Key Quests: Telvanni quests from various Mouths or even Telvanni Lords themselves (like Master Aryon) will lead you. Expect quests involving magic, research, and asserting Telvanni dominance.

Tips for Stronghold Owners

  • Storage: Strongholds offer vast amounts of safe storage for your loot. Remember that containers in your stronghold are generally safe from despawning items.
  • Training: Some strongholds may eventually attract trainers or merchants, providing convenient services.
  • Companions: Your stronghold can serve as a base for companions from the Tribunal or Bloodmoon expansions.
  • Roleplaying: Personalize your stronghold! Decorate it with trophies, rare books, and unique artifacts to truly make it your own.
  • Fast Travel: Consider using Mark/Recall spells or buying Almsivi/Divine Intervention amulets to quickly travel to and from your stronghold.

Building a stronghold is a testament to your dedication and power in Vvardenfell. Choose your House wisely, work hard, and soon you'll have a magnificent base of operations to call your own!
