Joining & Leaving Factions
Factions are a core element of Morrowind, offering unique questlines, benefits, and a sense of belonging within the game's complex political landscape. Joining a faction can provide access to specialized training, powerful gear, and important lore. However, some factions have conflicting ideologies, meaning you may not be able to join all of them simultaneously.
To join a faction, you typically need to meet certain prerequisites, which often involve having a specific skill level, a certain reputation, or completing a particular quest. You will then need to speak to the faction's leader or a desated recruiter and express your interest. For example, to join the Mages Guild, you might need a certain Intelligence or Mysticism skill and speak to an Arch-Mage.
Each faction has its own hierarchy and progression system. As you complete quests for a faction, your rank within that organization will increase. Higher ranks often unlock new quests, better rewards, and access to more exclusive areas or services. It's important to pay attention to the requirements for advancement, as failing to meet them can halt your progress.
Some of the major factions include the Great Houses (Hlaalu, Redoran, Telvanni), the Imperial Legion, the Blades, the Mages Guild, and the Thieves Guild. Each offers a distinct experience and contributes to the overarching narrative of Morrowind. The Great Houses, in particular, are central to the political intrigue of Vvardenfell.
Leaving a faction is usually straightforward. You can often speak to a faction representative and inform them of your decision. However, be aware that leaving a faction, especially if you are in a high rank, might have consequences. You may lose access to faction benefits, and your reputation with that group could suffer.
It's also possible to be expelled from a faction if you commit actions that violate their codes of conduct. For instance, if you are a member of the Mages Guild and are caught using forbidden magic or harming fellow guild members, you could be kicked out. This often results in a loss of rank and access.
Strategic faction choices can sificantly impact your gameplay. Some factions offer complementary skills or resources, while others are mutually exclusive. Carefully consider your character's build and desired playstyle when deciding which factions to join and how to progress within them.
