Thieves Guild Quests
If stealth, subterfuge, and a knack for acquiring other people's possessions are your preferred methods of operation, then the Thieves Guild is the organization for you. This shadowy network operates throughout Morrowind, offering lucrative opportunities for those with nimble fingers and a discreet approach. Quests will often involve pickpocketing, lockpicking, breaking and entering, retrieving stolen goods, and occasionally, more direct, albeit still clandestine, methods.
To truly excel within the Thieves Guild, investing in skills such as Sneak, Security, and Speechcraft is paramount. A high Sneak skill will allow you to move unseen, Security will open locked doors and chests, and Speechcraft will aid in persuasion and deception. Be cautious, as getting caught by guards or citizens can lead to significant bounties, imprisonment, and a tarnished reputation, which can hinder your progress not only with the Guild but with other factions as well.
The Thieves Guild provides invaluable services to its members, including access to fences who will purchase stolen goods (often for less than their market value, but without question), and trainers who can further hone your stealth-related abilities.

Joining the Thieves Guild
Joining the Thieves Guild is a straightforward process, but it requires you to seek out the right individuals and demonstrate a willingness to engage in their line of work. You do not need to be a member of any other guild or faction to join. The primary contact for new recruits is typically found in Balmora.
- Travel to Balmora: Make your way to the city of Balmora, located in the West Gash region.
- Locate the South Wall Cornerclub: Within Balmora, find the South Wall Cornerclub. It's a well-known establishment, often frequented by less reputable individuals.
- Speak with Ubyn Rethas: Inside the South Wall Cornerclub, you will find Ubyn Rethas. Speak to him about joining the Thieves Guild. He will be your initial point of contact and will offer you your first mission.
Key NPCs of the Thieves Guild

Early Thieves Guild Quests: The Balmora Ranks
Once you've spoken with Ubyn Rethas, you'll be tasked with a series of introductory quests designed to test your skills and establish your loyalty to the Guild. These early missions are crucial for gaining rank and unlocking more challenging assignments.
Quest 1: The Bitter Cup
- Objective: Steal the Bitter Cup from the South Wall Cornerclub and deliver it to Ubyn Rethas.
- Location: South Wall Cornerclub, Balmora.
- Details: The Bitter Cup is located in a locked chest within the South Wall Cornerclub. You'll need to use your Security skill to open the chest. Once acquired, return it to Ubyn Rethas.
- Reward: Gold, increased reputation with the Thieves Guild.
- Pitfall: Be careful not to be seen stealing the cup or by the guards if you are caught outside the club with it.
Quest 2: The Jones' Debt
- Objective: Collect a debt from a man named Llemel Jones.
- Location: Llemel Jones' house in Balmora.
- Details: Ubyn Rethas will tell you that Llemel Jones owes the Guild money. You need to go to his house and persuade him to pay. If he refuses, you may need to use a more forceful approach (though direct violence is discouraged by the Guild). A successful Speechcraft check is ideal.
- Reward: Gold.
- Pitfall: Llemel Jones can be stubborn. If your Speechcraft is low, you might need to resort to intimidation or, as a last resort, pickpocketing the gold from him.
Quest 3: The Stolen Crate
- Objective: Retrieve a stolen crate of moon sugar from a smuggler named Fargoth.
- Location: Fargoth's house in Seynne.
- Details: Ubyn Rethas will direct you to Seynne, a small settlement north of Balmora. Fargoth has stolen a crate of moon sugar that belongs to the Guild. You'll need to find his house and recover the crate. Fargoth may be hostile.
- Reward: Gold and potentially some moon sugar.
- Strategy: Approach Fargoth's house cautiously. If he attacks, defend yourself. The crate is usually found inside his house.
Quest 4: The Insatiable Drinker
- Objective: Steal a bottle of sujamma from the South Wall Cornerclub.
- Location: South Wall Cornerclub, Balmora.
- Details: This quest involves a bit of subterfuge. You need to steal a specific bottle of sujamma from the Cornerclub. This might involve pickpocketing or carefully navigating the club to acquire it without being noticed.
- Reward: Gold.
- Pitfall: The club can be crowded. Use your Sneak skill effectively.
Quest 5: The Shipment of Knives
- Objective: Intercept a shipment of knives intended for the local guard.
- Location: A road outside Balmora.
- Details: Ubyn Rethas will inform you that a shipment of knives is being transported and that the Guild wants it intercepted. You'll need to find the caravan carrying the knives and take them. This might involve combat with the caravan guards.
- Reward: Gold and potentially some throwing knives.
- Strategy: Ambush the caravan on the road. Be prepared for a fight.
Completing these early quests will significantly increase your standing within the Thieves Guild, allowing you to receive more complex and rewarding assignments from higher-ranking members like Percius Mercius.
