Spell & Enchantment Lists

Oblivion features a vast array of spells and enchantments that can dramatically alter your combat effectiveness, utility, and survivability. Mastering these magical arts requires understanding the different schools of magic, the effects of individual spells, and the principles of enchanting items.

The schools of magic in Oblivion are:

  • Alteration: Spells that manipulate the physical world, such as Feather, Burden, Water Breathing, and Shield spells.
  • Conjuration: Spells that summon creatures, weapons, or bound armor, and also include spells that banish Daedra.
  • Destruction: Offensive spells that deal damage, such as Fireball, Frostbolt, Lightning Bolt, and various area-of-effect spells.
  • Illusion: Spells that affect the minds of others, including Charm, Fear, Calm, and Invisibility.
  • Mysticism: Spells that manipulate magical energies, such as Dispel, Detect Life, Spell Absorption, and Telekinesis.
  • Restoration: Spells that heal, restore attributes, and provide magical defenses, such as Cure Disease, Fortify Health, and Ward spells.

Each spell has a magicka cost, magnitude, and duration, which can be further modified by your skill level in the relevant school and your Intelligence attribute. Spells can be purchased from spell merchants found in cities or learned from spell tomes.

Enchanting allows you to imbue items with magical effects. You can learn new enchantments by using soul gems on enchanted items or by finding specific enchanted gear. Powerful enchantments can sificantly boost your character's stats, resistances, or offensive capabilities.

Common enchantment effects include:

  • Fortify [Attribute/Skill]: Increases a specific attribute or skill.
  • Resist [Element/Magic]: Provides resistance to fire, frost, shock, or magic.
  • Absorb [Attribute/Health/Magicka]: Drains a target's attribute or health/magicka and transfers it to you.
  • Damage [Element]: Deals elemental damage to the target.
  • Shield: Provides a magical barrier that absorbs damage.

To create custom enchantments, you will need Grand Soul Gems filled with powerful souls and access to an Arcane Enchanter, typically found in guild halls or player homes.
