Character Development & Progression
In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, your character's growth is intrinsically linked to the skills they utilize. Unlike many RPGs, Oblivion features a classless system where your chosen skills and how you use them dictate your progression. As you use a skill, it levels up, and when enough skills increase, your overall character level rises. This system allows for immense build diversity, encouraging players to experiment with different playstyles.
When you create your character, you select a Race and a Births, each offering unique starting bonuses and abilities. Races provide passive stat boosts and special powers (e.g., Nords have Frost Resistance, Dark Elves have Fire Resistance). Birthss grant permanent magical effects or attribute increases. For example, the Warrior s provides a bonus to Strength and Endurance, while the Mage s boosts Intelligence and Willpower.
After choosing your race and births, you select seven Major Skills. These skills will level up faster than Minor Skills, contributing more sificantly to your character's overall level progression. It's crucial to choose skills that synergize with your intended playstyle. For a warrior, you might choose Blade, Block, and Heavy Armor. For a mage, Destruction, Mysticism, and Alteration would be wise choices. A rogue might focus on Sneak, Security, and Light Armor.
As you gain experience in your skills, they increase in level. When the sum of your Major Skill increases reaches a certain threshold, you gain a character level. Upon leveling up, you are presented with a choice to increase three of your core attributes: Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Speed, Endurance, Personality, and Luck. The amount you can increase each attribute is influenced by how many times you've leveled up the associated skills since your last level-up. For instance, leveling up Blade and Blunt skills will increase your Strength gain potential.
To maximize your attribute gains, it's beneficial to focus on leveling skills related to the attributes you wish to boost. For example, to get the maximum +5 bonus to Strength, you would need to have leveled up skills associated with Strength (like Blade, Blunt, Heavy Armor, Armorer, Block, Endurance) at least 10 times between level-ups.
Beyond skills and attributes, Perks are a sificant part of character progression, especially with certain mods or expansions. However, in the base game, the primary progression comes from skill usage and attribute allocation. Mastering your chosen skills and strategically increasing your attributes will allow you to overcome increasingly difficult challenges and tailor your character to your exact vision.
