Creatures & Enemies
Navigating the treacherous lands of Cyrodiil requires a keen understanding of the myriad creatures and enemies that inhabit its dungeons, wilds, and Oblivion Gates. This section will equip you with the knowledge to identify, engage, and ultimately overcome the diverse threats you'll encounter, from the mundane to the Daedric.
Understanding Enemy Scaling
Oblivion features a dynamic leveling system where many enemies scale with your character's level. This means that as you grow stronger, so too will many of your adversaries. While this ensures a consistent challenge, it also means that a Goblin at level 1 will be significantly weaker than a Goblin at level 20. Always be prepared for tougher variants of common foes as you progress.
Common Threats of Cyrodiil
You'll encounter these creatures frequently across the Tamrielic landscape. Understanding their basic behaviors and weaknesses is crucial for survival.
Wildlife
- Wolves: Often found in packs, wolves are fast but have low health. They primarily use melee attacks. A few well-placed power attacks or a strong spell can dispatch them quickly.
- Bears: More formidable than wolves, bears hit hard and have a decent health pool. They are typically solitary. Use ranged attacks or hit-and-run tactics. Blocking their attacks is effective, but watch your stamina.
- Mountain Lions: Agile and quick, mountain lions can be frustrating due to their speed. They often pounce. Try to stun them or use area-of-effect spells to keep them at bay.
- Rats: A nuisance more than a threat, rats are found in sewers, caves, and sometimes even cities. They pose little danger to even low-level characters.
Monsters & Undead
- Goblins: These common dungeon dwellers are found in various caves and forts. They often carry crude weapons and wear light armor. Goblin Shamans can cast basic destruction spells. Focus on the Shamans first to remove their magical support. Looting their camps can yield valuable Goblin Totems for certain quests or sale.
- Skeletons: Found in crypts and ruins, skeletons are immune to poison and resistant to frost. They are vulnerable to blunt weapons and fire spells. They often wield rusty swords or bows.
- Zombies: Slow but resilient, zombies can inflict disease. They are vulnerable to fire and blunt weapons. Keep your distance and use ranged attacks or powerful melee strikes. Carry Potions of Cure Disease or have a Restore Disease spell ready.
- Ghosts & Wraiths: Ethereal creatures that are immune to normal weapons. You'll need enchanted weapons, silver weapons, or spells to harm them. They often drain attributes or health.
- Trolls: Powerful and regenerating, trolls are a significant threat, especially at lower levels. They are highly vulnerable to fire damage. If you lack fire spells or enchanted weapons, focus on overwhelming them with sustained damage to prevent regeneration.
Daedric Foes from Oblivion
When Oblivion Gates open, you'll face the horrors of the Deadlands. These creatures are often more challenging and possess unique abilities.
Lesser Daedra
- Scamps: The weakest of the Daedra, Scamps are fast and often attack in groups. They primarily use fire spells. They are easily dispatched with physical attacks.
- Clannfears: Reptilian Daedra with a powerful charge attack. They have decent health and armor. Dodge their charge and counter-attack. They are susceptible to shock damage.
- Dremora: The most intelligent and dangerous of the lesser Daedra, Dremora come in various ranks (Churl, Kynval, Kynreeve, Kynmarcher, Valkynaz). They are skilled warriors and mages, often wielding Daedric weapons and wearing Daedric armor. Treat them like skilled human opponents. Focus on disabling their magic users first if present. Looting their bodies can yield valuable Daedric equipment.
- Flame Atronachs: These elemental Daedra are immune to fire and resistant to normal weapons. They cast powerful fire spells. Use frost or shock damage against them.
- Storm Atronachs: Immune to shock and resistant to normal weapons, Storm Atronachs cast shock spells and can paralyze. Use fire or frost damage.
- Frost Atronachs: Immune to frost and resistant to normal weapons, Frost Atronachs cast frost spells and can slow you. Use fire or shock damage.
Greater Daedra (Encountered in specific quests or high-level Oblivion Gates)
- Daedroth: Large, crocodile-like Daedra that breathe fire. They are tough and hit hard. Focus on ranged attacks or powerful melee strikes while dodging their fire breath.
- Spider Daedra: Half-woman, half-spider, these Daedra cast powerful shock spells and can summon Spiderling allies. Deal with the Spiderlings first, then focus on the Spider Daedra. They are vulnerable to fire.
- Xivilai: Tall, blue-skinned Daedra that are powerful warriors and mages. They often wield two-handed weapons or cast potent destruction spells. They are highly resistant to magic. Engage them carefully, using powerful physical attacks or dispelling their magic.
Strategies for Success
- Know Your Strengths: Are you a stealthy archer, a heavy-armored warrior, or a master of destruction? Tailor your approach to your character's build.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Many creatures have elemental or weapon type weaknesses. Use fire against trolls and undead, blunt weapons against skeletons, and enchanted weapons against ghosts.
- Crowd Control: When facing multiple enemies, use area-of-effect spells, shouts, or tactical retreats to thin their numbers. Prioritize dangerous spellcasters or archers.
- Potions and Poisons: Don't hoard your consumables! Potions of healing, stamina, and magicka are vital. Poisons can turn the tide against tough foes by draining health, damaging attributes, or paralyzing them.
- Enchantments: Enchanted weapons and armor provide significant advantages. A Fire Damage enchantment on a sword is invaluable against trolls, for example.
- Environmental Awareness: Use the environment to your advantage. Lure enemies into traps, bottlenecks, or off ledges.
- Save Frequently: Oblivion is unpredictable. Save before entering new areas or engaging tough enemies to avoid losing progress.
