Combat & Stealth
Oblivion offers a flexible combat system that allows players to approach encounters through direct confrontation or subtle stealth. Whether you prefer to charge into battle with a sword and shield or silently eliminate foes from the shadows, mastering both combat and stealth mechanics is key to overcoming the challenges of Cyrodiil.
Direct combat involves engaging enemies head-on using weapons, magic, or a combination of both. Blocking attacks, timing your strikes, and utilizing special abilities are crucial for success. Stealth, on the other hand, relies on remaining undetected, using cover, and striking from behind for critical damage. Both playstyles can be effective, and many players find a hybrid approach to be the most versatile.
Combat Mechanics
- Melee Combat: Utilize one-handed or two-handed weapons, shields for blocking, and power attacks for increased damage.
- Ranged Combat: Employ bows and arrows for engaging enemies from a distance.
- Magic: Cast spells from various schools (Destruction, Conjuration, etc.) to deal damage, control enemies, or buff yourself.
- Blocking: Use a shield or weapon to block incoming attacks, reducing damage taken.
- Critical Hits: Certain attacks, especially from behind, can result in critical damage.
Stealth Mechanics
- Detection: Enemies can detect you based on line of sight and sound. Crouching reduces the chance of being heard.
- Sneak Attacks: Striking an unaware enemy from behind deals sificantly increased damage.
- Invisibility: Spells and potions of invisibility can render you undetectable.
- Distraction: Throwing items or using certain spells can distract enemies.
- Pickpocketing: While not a primary mechanic, some mods add this functionality.
The effectiveness of your combat and stealth abilities is heavily influenced by your character's skills and attributes. High Strength and Endurance benefit melee combat, while Agility and Speed are useful for stealth and ranged attacks. Intelligence and Willpower are crucial for mages. Investing in skills like Blade, Blunt, Archery, Sneak, and Destruction will shape your combat prowess.
Many quests and encounters can be approached using either combat or stealth. For example, infiltrating a bandit camp can be done by fighting your way through or by using stealth to pick off guards one by one. Choosing the right approach often depends on your character's build and the specific situation. Experiment with both playstyles to find what suits you best.
