Spellmaking (Revisited)
Spellmaking in Oblivion is a powerful feature that allows players to create their own custom spells, combining various magical effects to suit their unique playstyle and needs. This system, accessible at the Arcane University, transforms spellcasting from a static list of learned spells into a dynamic and highly customizable experience, offering unparalleled flexibility for mages.
To engage in spellmaking, players must first join the Mages Guild and progress to a certain rank to gain access to the Arcane University. Once there, You can use the spellmaking altars to craft new spells by selecting from a wide array of spell effects, each with its own Magicka cost and skill requirement. The complexity and power of the spells you can create are limited by your skill in the relevant magic schools and your overall Magicka pool.
Accessing Spellmaking
- Join the Mages Guild: This is the first step to accessing higher magical facilities.
- Reach Arcane University: Progress through the Mages Guild quests until you are granted access to the Arcane University in the Imperial City.
- Use the Spellmaking Altar: Within the university, locate the spellmaking altars. You can create new spells here by combining effects.
Creating Custom Spells
The process of spellmaking involves several key components:
- Spell Effects: Choose from a variety of effects like Damage Health, Fortify Magicka, Invisibility, or Summon Flame Atronach. Each effect has a base cost.
- Magnitude and Duration: For many effects, you can adjust the magnitude (how strong the effect is) and duration (how long it lasts). Higher magnitudes and durations increase the Magicka cost.
- Area of Effect: Some spells can affect multiple targets or an area. This also increases the Magicka cost.
- Skill Requirements: Each spell effect is tied to a specific school of magic. The combined skill level of the effects you choose determines the minimum skill required to cast your custom spell.
- Magicka Cost: The total Magicka cost of your spell is calculated based on the chosen effects, their magnitudes, durations, and areas of effect. This cost must be manageable for your character's Magicka pool.
Tips for Effective Spellmaking
- Focus on Synergy: Combine effects that complement each other. For example, a spell that damages and then drains health can be very effective.
- Consider Your Skills: Create spells that al with your highest magic skills to reduce casting costs and increase success rates.
- Experiment with Resistances: Spells that offer resistances or absorb damage can be invaluable for survivability.
- Don't Overdo It: Extremely powerful spells can have exorbitant Magicka costs, making them impractical to cast. Balance power with usability.
- Name Your Spells: Give your custom creations memorable names!
