Enchanting

Enchanting allows you to imbue weapons and armor with magical properties, transforming ordinary gear into powerful artifacts. To begin your journey into the arcane arts of enchantment, you will need two crucial components: Soul Gems and access to an Altar of Enchanting. Soul Gems are vessels that capture the souls of defeated creatures, and they come in various sizes, from petty to grand, each capable of holding a soul of a corresponding magnitude. The larger the soul, the more potent the enchantment you can apply. These filled Soul Gems are then brought to an Altar of Enchanting, which are most readily found within the hallowed halls of the Arcane University. Experimentation is key, as different combinations of enchantments can yield unique and synergistic effects, allowing for highly personalized character builds.

Types of Enchantments

The possibilities for enchantment are vast and varied, offering a wide array of benefits to the discerning adventurer. Common enchantments include:

Elemental Damage: Inflict additional fire, frost, shock, or even magical damage upon your foes with each successful strike.
Skill Fortification: Enhance your proficiency in various skills, such as increasing your Blade skill for more effective swordplay, boosting your Illusion magic for greater control over minds, or improving your Sneak skill for silent assassinations.
Resistances: Bolster your defenses against magical and elemental attacks. You can gain resistance to fire, frost, shock, and even general magic, making you a formidable opponent against spellcasters.
Attribute Fortification: Directly increase your core attributes like Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Endurance, Personality, Luck, and Speed, providing a broad enhancement to your character's capabilities.
Other Powerful Effects: Beyond these common categories, enchantments can offer unique benefits like Water Breathing, Light, Burden, or even the ability to cast specific spells.

Acquiring Soul Gems and Learning Enchanting

Soul Gems can be found throughout Cyrodiil, often in the possession of mages, within dungeons, or purchased from merchants. To fill a Soul Gem, you must cast a soul trap spell on an enemy before it is defeated. The Arcane University is the primary hub for learning enchanting. Once you have access to an Altar of Enchanting, you can select an item, choose an enchantment effect from a list of available options (dependent on the type of Soul Gem used and the enchantment's magnitude), and then apply it to your chosen gear. Mastering enchanting is a sificant step towards creating a truly unique and powerful character capable of overcoming any challenge the land of Oblivion throws at you.
