Scrolls & Staves
In the world of Oblivion, magic is not solely confined to spellcasters. Scrolls and staves offer powerful magical effects that can be utilized by any character, regardless of their magical aptitude. These items provide a versatile way to access spells, from devastating offensive magic to crucial defensive buffs, adding another layer of tactical depth to combat and exploration.
Scrolls are single-use items that unleash a specific spell upon activation. They are invaluable for characters who have not invested heavily in magic skills, allowing them to cast powerful spells without expending Magicka. Staves, on the other hand, are reusable magical implements that hold a specific enchantment. While they have a limited number of charges, they can be replenished by using soul gems, making them a sustainable source of magical power.
Acquiring Scrolls and Staves
- Merchants: Spell merchants, particularly those found within the Mages Guild in various cities like Anvil, Bravil, and Skingrad, are the primary source for purchasing scrolls and staves.
- Loot: Scrolls can be found as random loot in dungeons, chests, and on defeated enemies. More powerful staves are often found in the lairs of powerful mages or in ancient ruins.
- Quest Rewards: Certain quests, especially those involving magical artifacts or Daedric shrines, may reward players with unique scrolls or staves.
- Crafting (Indirectly): While you cannot craft scrolls or staves directly, you can learn spells from scrolls, and the knowledge gained can be used for spellmaking at Mages Guild altars.
The effectiveness of a scroll or staff depends on the spell it contains and the player's skill level. For example, a scroll of Fireball will deal more damage if You has a higher Destruction skill. Similarly, the charges on a staff can be depleted faster if You attempts to cast a spell that is sificantly above their skill level. Always check the spell description and the number of charges remaining on a staff before engaging in combat.
