Companions & NPCs
While Oblivion is largely a solitary experience, the world is populated by a vast array of Non-Player Characters (NPCs) who can offer quests, services, information, and sometimes, companionship. While there isn't a traditional party system like in some other RPGs, certain NPCs can accompany you on specific quests, and understanding how to interact with the game's inhabitants is key to a fulfilling playthrough.
The NPCs in Oblivion range from common townsfolk and merchants to powerful guild leaders and enigmatic Daedric Princes. Each NPC has their own routines, personalities, and dialogue, contributing to the living, breathing world of Cyrodiil.
Key NPC Types:
- Merchants: Found in cities and towns, they buy and sell goods, offering a vital source of income and supplies.
- Innkeepers: Provide lodging, food, and often serve as sources of rumors and quest leads.
- Guards: Patrol cities and towns, offering information, acting as quest givers, and apprehending criminals.
- Quest Givers: Many NPCs are directly involved in giving quests, ranging from simple favors to complex multi-part adventures.
- Guild Members: Leaders and members of the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood play crucial roles in their respective questlines.
- Followers (Temporary): Certain quests may ass an NPC to accompany you for a specific duration or objective. These are not permanent companions but can be invaluable during their escort.
Interacting with NPCs:
Interaction with NPCs is primarily done through dialogue. Key interaction options include:
- Speechcraft: You can attempt to persuade, intimidate, or charm NPCs to improve their disposition towards you, which can unlock new dialogue options or quest rewards.
- Bribing: Offering gold can often improve an NPC's disposition, especially guards or those who are reluctant to help.
- Bartering: Engaging with merchants to buy and sell items.
Notable NPCs and Potential Companions:
- Martin Septim: The last heir to the Septim throne, he accompanies You during key moments of the main quest.
- Jauffre: The Grandmaster of the Blades, he provides guidance and support throughout the main quest.
- The Gray Fox: The enigmatic leader of the Thieves Guild, whose identity is a central mystery.
- Various Guild Leaders: Such as Arquen of the Dark Brotherhood or Hannibal Traven of the Mages Guild, who are central to their respective questlines.
While Oblivion doesn't feature permanent companions in the traditional sense, the NPCs you encounter are integral to the game's narrative and world-building. Building positive relationships with them through dialogue and completing their quests is essential for a rich and rewarding experience.
