Diseases & Curses
The world of Cyrodiil is not only filled with political intrigue and Daedric threats but also with a host of biological hazards. Diseases and curses can afflict You character, weakening them and imposing various penalties. Understanding how to contract, identify, and cure these ailments is vital for maintaining your character's health and effectiveness in combat and exploration.
Diseases are typically contracted from specific creatures, such as goblins, trolls, and vampires, or through environmental hazards. Curses, while less common, can be inflicted by certain magical effects or powerful enemies. Both can sificantly hinder your progress by reducing stats, draining magicka or fatigue, or even causing more severe debuffs. Fortunately, most diseases and curses can be cured through various means.
Common Diseases and Their Effects
Oblivion features several diseases, each with unique symptoms and stat reductions. Some of the more prevalent ones include:
- Rockjoint: Reduces Strength and Endurance. Contracted from trolls and some undead.
- Ataxia: Reduces Agility and Speed. Contracted from goblins and some beasts.
- Corprus: Reduces Strength and Intelligence. A particularly nasty disease, often associated with Daedric influence.

- Vampirism: While not strictly a disease in the traditional sense, it is a condition that can be contracted from vampires and drastically alters gameplay, offering strengths but also sificant weaknesses.
Curing Diseases and Curses
There are several ways to rid yourself of these afflictions:
- Resting: Sometimes, simply sleeping in a bed will cure minor diseases.
- Potions: Potions of Cure Disease can be purchased from alchemists or found as loot.
- Spells: The Restoration school of magic offers spells like "Cure Disease" which can be learned and cast.
- Shrines: Praying at the Wayshrines of the Nine Divines will often cure diseases and curses.
- Faction Quests: Certain faction quests, particularly those involving the Mages Guild or Daedric Princes, may offer unique cures or remedies.
Preventative Measures
While not always possible, being aware of the creatures and environments that can inflict diseases can help you avoid them. Using protective enchantments or spells that boost your resistance to disease can also be beneficial.
