Cyrodiil Overview
Cyrodiil, the heartland of the Tamrielic Empire, is a vast and diverse province that serves as the setting for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. From the bustling Imperial City to the rugged mountains of Skyrim's border and the lush forests of the Nibenay Valley, each region offers unique landscapes, inhabitants, and challenges. Understanding the geography and key locations will greatly aid your exploration and questing throughout the game.
Cyrodiil is divided into several distinct regions, each with its own climate, flora, fauna, and architectural style. The central region is dominated by the Imperial City, the capital of the Empire, a sprawling metropolis filled with political intrigue, diverse guilds, and the Emperor's palace. Surrounding the Imperial City are the fertile plains of the Heartlands, dotted with farms, villages, and the occasional bandit camp. To the north, the Great Forest and the Colovian Highlands offer more rugged terrain, with dense woodlands and rolling hills, eventually giving way to the colder climes bordering Skyrim.
To the east lies the Nibenay Valley, characterized by its lush forests, winding rivers, and more exotic flora. This region is home to the city of Cheydinhal, known for its artistic community and the Mages Guild. Further south, the Blackwood region is a swampy, dark, and mysterious area, home to Argonian settlements and the infamous Dark Brotherhood sanctuary. The Gold Coast, in the southwest, is a more temperate region with coastal towns and a more Mediterranean feel.
Key locations and features of Cyrodiil include:
- The Imperial City: The political and cultural center, featuring the Arena, Talos Plaza District, Market District, and the Arcane University.
- Guild Halls: Major cities host the headquarters for the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood.
- Daedric Shrines: Scattered throughout the wilderness, these offer unique quests and powerful artifacts.
